Women in Wine

Julien Schaal and his wife, Sophie, are modern day winemaking magicians. Shortly after completing vintage in their native France, they prepare to pack up and jet off to South Africa where they do it all over again to make their delicious vinos in the southern hemisphere. Head buyer, John, says, “Look for a more savoury style, as Julien is sandwiched between the old and new worlds.” Right he is, too. There’s all the New World’s richness of fruit, balanced by Old World texture and poise. To give you a reference point, this could easily be a Yarra chardy from a classy vintage. Cashew and macadamia nuts meet subtle but intense fruit. It’s not too shouty, instead calmly emanating a delightful complexity. Peach granita, lemon butter, melon and Golden Delicious. The palate is silken, mouthfilling and gently textured. The finish, long and scrumptious.

Another vintage from a killer producer from the King Valley, a glorious gris-growing region. D’Sas certainly know what they’re doing with the grape. Nevertheless, the amount of flavour and complexity you get for your money is surprising. Luscious, plentiful orchard flavours abound here. Apples and pears, exotic spices, clove and almond meal make for a marvellous marriage with Asian cuisine or creamy cheeses.

Portugal's touriga and tempranillo (aka tinta roriz) combine to make a fruit-forward, plush and food-friendly wine. If you like McLaren reds, this is going to be a lovely departure from shiraz, showing off plums, cherries and herbaceousness. It's got a few years on it, so it's got a smooth and mellow palate - ready to open and enjoy.

The team at Silkwood Estate have done a sterling job with this cabernet malbec blend. It's all plums backed up with subtle oak, spice and a touch of fennel showing some varietal leafiness and liquorice in there. And then more subtle notes poke through with violets and dry summer earth rounding out with a bit of cherry oak. Big, rich and full-flavoured, there are nice chunky tannins here providing grip, without being overly drying or cloying. This is bang on. The malbec certainly adds a dose of good vibes.

The ripper rosé is exactly as the name says - Big and Easy - big on flavour and easy on the eyes. Made from McLaren Vale mataro and grenache, it's full of berries and has a palate like a rose petal - soft and plush. The plushness is balanced by a refreshing, zest finish. Great wine from a mofo favourite who always delivers.
