Oh sweet Lou, how the ‘Fo loves you! For six vintages running, our Mofo’s have snatched up all the Golden Lion shiraz as fast as we could get it into our warehouse. So where do we go from here? It’s onwards and upwards into the stratosphere of the reserve. For the first time in the history of the ‘Fo, we’ve got the Golden Lion RESERVE shiraz in stock. It’s from the excellent 2017 vintage and feels kinda like welding a jet engine to the back of their regular shiraz. Strap in tight cos it’s gonna be a wild ride. In the glass, the colour is a deep crimson red and there’s lifted aromas of plum, pepper, vanilla and mocha. The palate is full and generous with dark fruits, interwoven spice and savoury tannins. Lou Miranda has included American oak in the ageing regime on this, adding a touch of coconut and further vanilla to the wine. It’s ready to go with a big ole’ steak right now or will happily nap in your cellar for 15 years. This big boy is here for you now and in the future.

Mornington Peninsula is such a great region for pinot noir, but due to the high demand for the wine, it’s often quite difficult to find good deals for our mofo's. From time to time, one does come through though. This pinot, made by Hickinbotham of Dromana, comes from the strong 2016 vintage. It’s quite elegant and silky, but there is a bit of oomph to it in the form of hints of cola, tar and dark fruits. There’s black cherry, rhubarb and sassafras on the palate, and the finish is long and just a touch spicy.

There’s never any shortage of revolutions in the wine world. Grapes, regions, winemakers and styles take the world by storm, one after the other. First it was Cali cabernet, then NZ sav blanc. You know the story. Chile’s had a quieter revolution, though. They’ve been quietly upping their game, year after year, and making some stunning wines. Time for them to get the recognition they deserve. This chardy is fleshy and full, but showcases tasteful restraint in the winemaking. Zippy acidity steers the palate to considerable freshness and highlights the beautiful fruit purity on display. The finish is soft and softly creamy, leaving you immediately keen for another sip.

For fans of Margaret River cabernet, it doesn’t get much better than this in terms of quality and value. We’ve got cabernet (with a touch of merlot, cab franc and petit verdot) from the exceptional 2017 vintage made by Higher Plane, a Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery. It’s all from a single vineyard and sees 15 months in 20% new French oak before bottling. Think black and red currants, cherries and raspberries, all supported by vanilla, coffee and cinnamon from the oak treatment. Very varietal, very delicious.

It’s a bit wintry. Comfort food is the way to go. After dinner, you sit around the Coonara and watch a movie or play a game. What should be in your glass? This of course! Morris is one of the masters of Rutherglen and their classic muscat is an institution of Aussie wine history. It’s rich, intense and complex; such a viscous wine with a deep brown colour, luscious notes of nuts and preserved fruits, and a dry finish with well integrated oak. It’s pretty much won every gold medal the judges can give for an Aussie fortified so you know you’re getting the goods. Now go claim your favourite spot on the couch and settle in with something classic.
