An almost unique style of chardy - this is absolutely one to try. There’s no shortage of classic flavours. You’ll get all the fresh citrus, green and yellow apples and white peach you could wish for. But this also sees flor ageing in barrel, not unlike sherry. And that’s where the magic happens. The fruit is enhanced with complex yeasty notes, vanillin-sweet oak and nutty-savoury undertones. It’s richly flavoured, but perfectly balanced at the same time.

Stefano Lubiana is a Tassie legend. Not only is he one of the best winemakers on the island, but everything he does is biodynamic and organic. His 2015 riesling is just starting to tip over into that aged rizza realm but still carries a lot of the primary citrus vivacity that starts at inception. Add to that some honeyed notes, herbal hints and mouthfilling texture, and you've got yourself one of the best rieslings you can drink from our southernmost state.

The best bubbles generally come from a colder climate that can produce great pinot and chardonnay. Anywhere in Australia fit that description? How about Tasmania! The Apple Isle is without a doubt the home of the greatest sparkling wines our country can produce. We’ve got a fantastic one here from Riversdale Estate that’s 60% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay and 5% pinot meunier. After 20 months on lees, the wine has an almost imperceptible 4 g/L of residual sugar, making for a refreshing, dry style of fizz with loads of complexity. This is Tassie doing what Tassie does best, making sparkling wines that rival the best coming out of France. And just in time for the summer months.
