4.5 stars Sam Kim

Here's a fantastic example of why the Yarra Valley is so good at producing quality sparkling wine. It's hard to know which is the better half as both the chardonnay and pinot noir components deliver in spades. Chardonnay gets the party started with fine citrus fruit and mineral acidity, while pinot noir adds softer strawberry notes and body. Crisp and clean, there's a fine bead in the glass and a lovely creamy texture on your tongue. This is definitely fine fizz. "It is elegantly fragrant on the nose showing white stone fruit, lemon peel and apple blossom aromas with a hint of brioche complexity. The palate is finely texture and delicately fruited, and delivers pristine fruit flavours backed by bright acidity, leading to a persistent dry finish. A delightfully expressed sparkling wine." - Sam Kim

Mofo Fave

Capel Vale consistently makes great wines that overdeliver on value. This chardonnay is as fresh as they come. In fact it's the first 2020 chardy we have stocked. The fruit is super bright and leaning towards lemon and peach, with just a hint of nuttiness behind it and vibrant acid on the finish to help cleanse the palate when paired with a meal.

The ripper rosé is exactly as the name says - Big and Easy - big on flavour and easy on the eyes. Made from McLaren Vale mataro and grenache, it’s full of berries and has a palate like a rose petal - soft and plush. The plushness is balanced by a refreshing, zest finish. Great wine from a mofo favourite who always delivers.

When sauvignon blanc is given a touch of oak, it brings about such a beautiful undercurrent of texture, structure and length. You’ll still get all the hallmarks of the varietal everyone knows and loves like passionfruit and guava, but there’s so much more. Call it an unlocking of potential if you will. Ghost Rock makes their sav blanc from estate fruit with a deft touch. It’s your favourite wine, levelled up.

Fiano is a versatile grape and suits a lot of growing conditions, from the Mediterranean climate of McLaren Vale to the alpine freshness of the King Valley. This KV example by Twin Valleys is a touch lighter and brighter than what you’d get from the Vale - sitting closer to grigio than say, viognier. There is still heaps of fruit and florals in this wine and acid to accompany all sorts of foods - though no doubt best with something southern Italian.

What can't Gapsted do? They are an absolute Alpine winemaking powerhouse and this grigio is just an entry into their world of reds and whites. The wine is refreshing and herbaceous, with delicate florals and crisp apple. It's bright and nervy on the palate. Deeee-lish!
