Magnus means 'great' in Latin and they were not wrong in naming this powerful and robust wine. Based in Padthaway, which is famous for it's powerful shiraz, Henry's drive have crafted a wonderful wine that is singing at five years old. There's a splash of McLaren Vale juice in this one too, bringing jubey red fruit and great colour. The wine is full of plums, dark cherries and spice from nearly two years in new French oak.

We love what Thistledown do over in SA, working with some of the best vineyards in Barossa, McLaren and the Hills. This an elegant take on Barossa, medium-bodied shiraz made in a savoury style. Savoury say? Yep, expect classic shiraz fruit and spice, such as plums and licorice, balanced out by a wild herbal streak and super-dry finish.

This wine has power and other-worldly levels of deliciousness. In the glass, the colour is a deep crimson red and there’s lifted aromas of plum, pepper, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate is full and generous with dark fruits, interwoven spice and savoury tannins. Lou Miranda has included American oak in the ageing regime on this, adding a touch of coconut and further vanilla to the wine. It’s ready to go with a big ole’ steak right now or will happily nap in your cellar for 15 years.

This is your archetypal rich and full-bodied Vale shiraz. III Associates know their target market, and their target market know them. So it’s packed with ripe purple fruit, sticks of vanilla and generous licks of coffee and caramel. Named for the Black Bay of Biscay Clay, the vines are grown in, which leads to small grapes of wonderful density. So no wonder the colour, flavour and all the things are dialled up in this wine. The wine spends a year in a combinations of French and American oak barrels - largely new - so there is tannin, notes of cedar and even more power. Lovers of no-holds-barred flavour unite!

The Auld Family have been crafting excellent wine in Barossa for quite a few years - across generations in fact! This shiraz is their flagship, paying tribute to those who planted the vineyard back in the 1860’s. It’s certainly not shy, just as you’d expect in a wine from this warm climate. After a year in French oak, this is full-bodied, quite moreish and dark. This is balanced by some sweet fruit, chocolate and mocha on the smooth palate and the finish has softened (as has the tannin) after five years of age.

Not to be confused with Geoff Merrill’s ‘Pimpala Road’ range, these Pimpala Vineyard wines are careful barrel selections from his reserve range. This has spent no less than 20 months in French and American oak barrels, plus over three years in the cellar to let all its powerful fruit and decadent oak flavour all meld together. It’s roughly a 2:1 Coonawarra:McLaren Vale blend - Coonawarra class, with ramped up richness from the Vale’s contribution. It’s like liquid black chocolate cake, with the Vale’s dark chocolate and heady spice flavours oozing head-on into dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf and roasted coconut. It’s on the fuller side of medium-bodied, with classic cabernet scaffolding fleshed out and as smooth as can be.
