Why do we love this case?

It’s that time of year again! Maybe it’s not as big as Christmas or New Year’s, but Australia definitely takes a collective break to celebrate the AFL and NRL finals. We know we’ll be glued to the telly, scarf in one hand and wine glass in the other. Here’s a diverse and delicious mixed case to keep that glass full no matter your taste.

Each case contains ONE bottle of the following:

Pepper Tree Wines Black Label Limited Release Shiraz Cabernet 2016
Allspice

FIve Red Star Halliday Rated Winery
Buyers Pick - John

Big, bold and bright! It’s that classic Aussie combo of shiraz and cabernet, made by Pepper Tree and straight outta Wrattonbully, the region with maybe the coolest name in Australia (one could argue for Tumbarumba though). Anyways, Wrattonbully runs up against Coonawarra on one side and the beach on the other. The grapes enjoy the maritime influence, leading to impressive structure in cabernet and condensed flavours in shiraz. Pepper Tree combines the two varieties, giving you the best of both worlds with intense red fruit and spice, held together by soft, yet quite present tannins. No wonder us Aussies perfected this blend.

This sangio is the stuff of legend here at the ‘fo. We’re all big fans of Chianti, of course, but it’s nice to enjoy home-grown heroes too. And this, paired with a good feed and a dining room full of family, is nothing short of heroic. Boisterously juicy cherries, crackling spice and dusty Tuscan-inspired tannins make this food-friendly fiend an absolute devil in the dining room. Stupidly smashable, it’ll win your whole clan over in no time.

When Kevin Mitchell, founder of Kilikanoon and the man behind Woodvale, tells us he’s got some riesling for us, we jump to attention. After our first taste, we jumped even higher. It’s everything you would want from the variety that makes Clare famous. It’s crisp, textural, bright, laser sharp and the tiniest bit rich. The fruit is of that classic riesling profile with an array of citrus spanning from meyer lemon to key lime to grapefruit and even mandarin. We’re loving it and can’t wait for you to as well.

Fragrant wild strawberries and redcurrants meet rich earthiness and a zesty, fresh herbaceousness. Don’t overchill - it’s perfect if you have it out of the fridge for 10 or 20 minutes to let the flavours thrive in the glass. You’re gonna want some antipasto and either a bunch of sun, or a crackling fire.

Sam Kim

We're going to let wine critic Sam Kim do the work here: "A delectably expressed shiraz; the perfumed bouquet shows dark plum, sweet cherry, subtle spice and floral aromas with hints of cocoa and cedar. It's wonderfully weighted and rounded on the palate, delivering fabulous fruit purity together with silky texture and rounded tannins. Flavoursome and instantly appealing. At its best: now to 2034."

New Zealand has become an international force on the pinot scene the past couple of decades, and the Waipara Valley on the South Island has certainly played its part. Less than an hour north of Christchurch, this wine region is protected from the ocean winds by the Teviotdale hills, allowing for warm air to come down from the northwest. The soils are diverse, ranging from gravel to limestone to loam. The long hot autumn just ahead of harvest ensures full ripening and bright, concentrated flavours in the wines. This pinot noir from Sherwood Estate is rich and ripe with a palate of plum and blackberry. There is a hint of oak and a smooth finish. For lovers of Kiwi pinot, this’ll scratch that itch.

Carlei Green Vineyards Pinot Gris 2019
Pear
Citrus
Melon
Medium-bodied

Carlei sources the fruit for this gris from the King Valley, whose cool climes make for a long ripening season. The grapes underwent a gentle crush and fermentation utilising wild yeast before settling and heading straight to bottle. Nothing else was necessary... just let the juice speak for itself. The fruit profile dominates here with citrus, melon and pear, but you’ll also find the spice and viscosity typical of great gris. Vibrant acid rounds things out to make for a refreshing finish and easy pairing with many dishes.

Seriously delicious and surprisingly complex Yarra chardonnay. You shouldn't expect anything less from Yarra wine institution De Bortoli. The fruit comes from three vineyards in different corners of the valley, blending together to provide texture, nuttiness, citrus, chalky minerality and some savoury notes. A mix of French oak and stainless steel are used for ageing, further adding to the exquisite balance.

Nga Waka leaves us little choice but to dive into this excellent example of Martinborough sauvignon blanc. There’s more than meets the eye here with subtlety and complexity on show due to an array of nuanced tropical aromas balanced nicely with vibrant citrus acidity. Grassy herbs and stony minerality leave the palate fresh and clean and yearning for another sip. Nothing is over the top or out of whack and the more you sip this stunning Kiwi, the more you’ll find there is to explore.

St Johns Road Line & Length Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Allspice
Plum
Cedar
Medium-bodied
Bright

'Line and Length' is more than a catchy name for this wine from St Johns Road. If it weren’t for the cabernet ‘grip’, the textbook tannin that squares things away so nicely, it would simply slide down the hatch. It’s just too easy breezy and delicious. The lifted red berry aroma is a gentle prelude to dark berries that roll in waves, washing over the palate with some cheeky vanilla sweetness lolling around too. Bold with just subtle oak on the finish, this is a ‘sit down’ kinda wine. No shaking the snake hips on the dance floor but rather dim the lights, recline and settle in.
