Why do we love this case?

Deck the halls with boughs of holly...I don’t think I’ve ever head anyone ask Santa for a bough of holly for Christmas (full disclosure - I had to look up exactly what a ‘bough’ is). Wine on the other hand, now that’s a gift that’s sure to be loved! So if you’re favourite loved one, mate or coworker is hosting Chrissy lunch at their place, this is the perfect case to pair with the meal from start to finish. We open with some fizz, move on to a nice rich chardy, then take a journey from light to full-bodied reds. And to top it all off, there’s a tawny to pair with that fruitcake you’ll have to force down to be polite. Merry merry!

Gorgeous packaging and an even more gorgeous wine. It starts with the visual: a bottle hefty like Thor’s hammer and a stunning label. Inside is a Bordeaux-style blend dominated by cabernet sauvignon with a bit of cabernet franc and petit verdot to round it out. Normally when we try a wine as Mofo buyers, we have a couple of tastes, then write our tasting notes and move on. This one stayed with me for days as I used my Coravin wine preserver to pour myself a glass each night until I emptied the bottle. It’s such a complex wine, rich in body yet reserved in expression. There’s blackcurrant, tobacco, autumnal leaves, fine-grained tannins and such a silky mouthfeel. This is drinking so well right now, but has years ahead of it to develop and evolve.

New to the 'fo

Small batch and handcrafted using premium fruit from one of their best McLaren Vale vineyards - Ulithorne have made a beautiful shiraz that showcases the region and variety with class and enthusiasm. Vibrant, rich and abuzz with energy, juicy redcurrant and plum punctuate the palate, followed by a generous dash of spice. Fruit forward and silky smooth with lingering tannins throughout, it’s complete with a long, striking finish. Drinking well now and with a decade ahead of it.

It’s no secret that Oregon has been producing some of the world’s best pinot noir for many, many years. We’re just rarely lucky enough to see it over here in Australia. And we’re pretty confident that you’ll never see it at this price, especially from Erath, one of the states most renowned and historic producers. Aromas of cherry, plum lavender and anise jump out of the glass. The first sip expresses pomegranate, cranberry and some nice acid and tannin. A bit of spice, smoke and structure comes from time spent in 20% new French oak. If you know Oregon pinot, then you’ll know what to expect. If this is your first foray into it, look out for the bright fruit of the Yarra style coupled with the wild earthiness of Central Otago.

This is the bigger, richer, nuttier end of the spectrum in Yarra chardonnay. Sunshine Creek embraces this style as a compelling contrast for lovers of the old school. It’s had a couple years in the bottle, allowing these fuller characteristics to come to the forefront. We’re talking honey, marzipan, cashews and peaches. There’s still enough citrus and flintiness to provide balance, but this isn’t one for those chasing light and lean chardy. If you like yours on the more robust side, this’ll put a smile on your face.

Mofo Fave

The best bubbles generally come from a colder climate that can produce great pinot and chardonnay. Anywhere in Australia fit that description? How about Tasmania! The Apple Isle is without a doubt the home of the greatest sparkling wines our country can produce. We’ve got a fantastic one here from Riversdale Estate that’s 60% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay and 5% pinot meunier. After 20 months on lees, the wine has an almost imperceptible 4 g/L of residual sugar, making for a refreshing, dry style of fizz with loads of complexity. This is Tassie doing what Tassie does best, making sparkling wines that rival the best coming out of France. And just in time for the summer months.
