Chateau Yaldara 1847 First Pick Shiraz 2017

Barossa, SA

94pts Halliday Wine Companion | Old Vine

Nestled at the foot of the Barossa Ranges in the small, premium sub-region of Rowland Flat, you’ll find Chateau Yaldara- a pioneering Barossa winery founded in the 1940’s by one of Barossa’s first boutique winemakers. If you’ve been searching for that special wine to keep in your cellar for years to come- here it is. Like a fine Barolo, a Hunter semillon, or a good Rhône red, this wine will repay your patience in multitudes. From the cool yields of the 2017 vintage came some surprisingly stunning shiraz, which is what you get right here. Brimming with chocolatey, cedary, spicy notes and the darkest, juiciest plums you can imagine. Just wait and see what this wine will do with another decade in the bottle.

The Other Mates

Brand & Sons Family Reserve Cabernets 2016

Coonawarra, SA

96pts Sam Kim | 96pts National Liquor News, Geoff Bollom | 95pts QWine | 95pts Ken Gargett | Blue Gold 2019 Sydney International Wine Competition | Gold Medal 2018 Hobart Wine Show | Gold Medal 2018 Limestone Coast Wine Show | 94pts Huon Hooke | 94pts Campbell Matheson | 94pts James Halliday Australian Wine Companion | Top of Class 2018 Hobart Wine Show | Top of Class 2018 Limestone Coast Wine Show

Honestly folks, if there were any more medals around the neck of this bottle, it would collapse from the weight. Inspired by the blends of Bordeaux, the powerhouse producers at Brand & Sons have combined cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot into something that has clearly delighted the wine critics and judges. It’s immensely complex, expressing an array of blue and black fruits along with violets, earthiness, herbs, chocolate and mint. There’s so much happening all the way through the finish, finally rounding out with fine-grained tannin and a touch of spice. Coonawarra doesn’t get much better than this.

Massena Stonegarden GSM 2018

Eden Valley, SA

95pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | Vegan-Friendly | Single Vineyard | Boutique Producer

Massena are a boutique producer, and although their wines are new to the ‘fo we are super pumped to have them. This small batch GSM is from one of Eden Valley’s best vineyards, grapes grown on old bush vines. We’re not certain of the breakdown of varieties, but can say it’s a bit more serious that your average, easy-going GSM. It was fermented with whole bunches, which has resulted in earthy tannins and a wonderful perfume. It’s a nod to the Rhône, with both feet firmly planted in the power and richness of SA.

Mitolo Cantiniere Shiraz 2018

McLaren Vale, SA

96pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | Vegan-Friendly

Mitolo’s Cantiniere is back! When I was part of the Dealer Team, chatting directly with mofos on the phone, this was without doubt one of the top 3 wines people asked for more of. It’s as intense, as complex, as high quality, as powerful as it is deeply, unendingly and immeasurably satisfying. A fanfare of Black Doris plum, blackberry, roasted nuts and spices, and super dark chocolate bursts onto the palate with the first sip. A cascade of supple tannin enhances the larger-than-life mouthfeel, with a bright flash of lively acidity to accompany. It’s sumptuous, opulent, decadent and however many other plush adjectives you care to throw at it. Plus it’ll cellar for a decade, easy. If you’ve not experienced it yet, you’re in for a wild ride!

Indómita Duette Cabernet Carménère 2019

Maipo Valley, Chile

96pts DWWA 2021 | Gold DWWA 2021 | 93pts James Suckling

We haven’t had a wine from Chilean producer Indómita since the 2015 vintage. Not sure why, it just kinda happened that way. But there’s nothing like a Gold medal and 96 point score from Decanter to remind you that it’s time to reignite that relationship! This 50/50 blend of cabernet sauvignon and carménère (the unofficial national grape of Chile) is an absolute stunner. Carménère serves in the same role as merlot (some argue they are potentially the same genetically) in making what shapes up to be an exceptional Chilean take on a Bordeaux-style red blend. It’s dark, spicy, full of fruit, framed with structure, and given to an incredibly lengthy finish. Welcome back, Indómita!
