THE BOSS

Pirramimma ACJ Cabernet Blend 2017

McLaren Vale, SA

97pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | 5 Star Halliday Rated Winery

Pirramimma doesn’t produce this wine every year, opting only to do so in exceptional vintages. It’s named to honour Alexander Campbell Johnston, the founder of Pirramimma who planted his first vines nearly 125 years ago. The wine is comprised of 48% cab sav with smaller portions of shiraz, petit verdot, tannat, merlot and malbec. There’s some serious attention to detail in the blending before two years of ageing in a mix of new and old French oak. It’s a big, yet structured wine expressing a nose of blackberry, violets, cherry and olives. The palate continues the cherry characteristic, complemented by boysenberry, musk and licorice. The tannin is ripe, providing a sustained finish and graceful ageing for 15 years. ACJ is a man worth honouring and this is a wine up to that task.

The 11 Mates

Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 - 2 bottles

Wrattonbully, SA

5 Star Halliday Rated Winery

Coonawarra gets all the attention, but Wrattonbully perhaps deserves the same acclaim. It’s only twenty minutes down the road, generally provides better value and has a cooler name in my opinion (just saying’, not that it matters for what’s in the bottle). This cabernet comes from a national producer who works wonders in the region and exhibits all the classic hallmarks of the variety held together by some healthy French oak treatment. On top of all that, it’s already got five years of age, placing it right in its drinking prime.

YOU’D PAY $35 full price.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 - 1 bottle

Coonawarra, SA

5 Star Halliday Rated Winery | Women in Wine

Unmistakably Coonawarra cabernet that doesn’t cost the earth. It doesn’t need a decade in the cellar either. Softly but firmly structured, it’s easy and enjoyable drinking, with all the luscious, brambly berries, eucalypt and cedar notes you’re longing for.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 - 2 bottles

Adelaide Hills, SA

97pts Wine State | 5 Stars Wine State | 5 Star Halliday Rated Winery

This cabernet is what I would call cool and classy, with a medium body and all the hallmarks of the variety - structure, herbaceousness and ageability. It is brimming with aromas of black olives, brooding dark fruit, creamy chocolate, spice, a dash of mint and a hint of violets. The palate is textured and balanced, elegant with fine acidity and chalky tannins being the keys to its success. A cabernet that would get top marks on any table, the only thing smarter than the wine is the price.

YOU’D PAY $30 full price.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 - 2 bottles

Great Southern, WA

This is lovely cabernet for the money. Lean, bright and tastefully structured, it hits all the right notes at all the right times. Blackberry, mulberry and softly-spoken coffee ground aromatics make for some lovely easy drinking. It finishes long and elegant. There’s plenty going on, but it won’t make you feel guilty for cracking on a weeknight. It’s indulgent, but measured.

YOU’D PAY $28 full price.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 - 2 bottles

Limestone Coast, SA

94pts Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim | Single Vineyard

This tasty cabernet straddles both worlds of youthful and serious, from Coonawarra’s little brother region of the Limestone Coast. Drinkability is at the forefront, with just enough tannin structure to make you know it’s cabernet. Black currants, spice and dark herbaceous notes are underscored by licorice and a touch of pepper. Fruit delivers powerfully and with some unexpected mid-palate richness. Long-lasting Limestone Coast goodness right here.

YOU’D PAY $27 full price.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 - 2 bottles

Langhorne Creek, SA

94pts Sam Kim | 5 Star Halliday Rated Producer | Vegan-friendly

This pan-South Aussie producer is fast becoming a mofo favourite, across their delicious red and white wines. They seek out parcels of quality grapes in Barossa, McLaren and on this case the maritime region of Langhorne Creek. Their wines are made to a high-standard across the range and are reliably delicious. This cabernet shows off a perfumed nose of flowers, juicy plums and dried herbs, followed by a medium-bodied, ripe and textured palate. There’s a gentle earthiness in the wine that is wrapped in blackberries and a lingering olive tapenade finish.

YOU’D PAY $22 full price.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
