Kopke are one of the major Port players, with a history dating back to 1638, with some barrels over 100 years old. This fine-looking number has an average age of 10 years, meaning you get the best of both worlds blended together: younguns with pure vibrancy meet ancient, wisdom-inducing old Ports that bring intensity around the edges. So that vibrant fruitiness fills the mid-palate while it stretches out to a long sweet, salty, umami-lined finish. Perfect for Christmas pudding, every cheese imaginable, or just the end of the night on the good couch.

Castelnau de Suduiraut is the Château’s more approachable, ‘drink now’ Sauternes. They still harvest late, but do not wait as long as with the rest of their crop. Composed of 96% semillon and 4% sauvignon blanc, the wine sees 18 months in barrel, only 15% of which are new. Like all Sauternes, this is a bright golden yellow in colour. The nose starts out restrained but opens up with candied and spiced notes once it gets a bit of air. It’s silky on the palate with flavours of melon, acacia honey and candied citrus. The finish is long and reminiscent of brown sugar and oranges. This is a delicious example of what many consider the world’s greatest sweet wine.

Feeling tawny? This Dark Angel from Lou Miranda is here to satisfy all your darkest fortified fantasies. It’s well equipped too, with 96 points from Wine Showcase and 94 from Sam Kim. More importantly, it’s smooth and sweet with toasted nut, toffee, spice and raisin notes. As Sam Kim says, “a splendid fortified wine offering maturity and sophistication” – just like you mofos.

Here is what Ned Goodwin MW had to say about this wine in his 98 point Halliday review: "The ambient fermentation was muted at the very beginning with the addition of the spirit. Following 3 years in wooden vats, this fortified wine was then aged further in old and very old puncheons for 15 years. Stunning! The spirit is beautifully integrated, composing an elixir of compelling mahogany, creme caramel, cheesecloth, varnish, rose water, grape spice, date and a carnival of Moroccan souk scents. The finish is infinitesimal. Among the finest fortifieds of my tasting experience this year."

This Tawny is a mere dip-of-the-toe into Kopke's range. It’s sweet and packed to the brim with dried fruit and caramel flavours, as well as a little nutty hint. This is the perfect wine to keep tucked away till dessert, and has been satisfying mofos the world over since the 1600s.

Sandeman are one of the legends of Port, their delicious fortified wines as legendary as their imagery. The colour is light, yet the palate is intense as you’d expect from a tawny. The nose is of vanilla and dried fruits, which flow into equivalent flavours that are lifted by spice and toast from the oak ageing. So curl up by the fire, grab a nice book (or the tele remote) and enjoy a glass of this before your slumber.
