If you’re mad about all things tempranillo, this is the pack for you. This is a collection of some of the best expressions of the grape you’re likely to find anywhere. We’re talking several seriously fantastical Rioja’s, a touch of Rioja Alta, and even a cheeky little number from the Adelaide Hills. If you’re looking to pay through the nose though, look elsewhere. There’s only unbelievable value for super-premium wine and staggering quality in the glass for you here. We’ve spanned a number of vintages as well, going as far back as 2013.
Every case contains ONE of each of the following:

Cune are one of the top producers in Rioja Alta, leading this pack with style. In their Reserva, tempranillo is the star (no surprises), and local grapes graciano and mazuelo play a supporting role, adding depth and complexity. The carefully selected grapes are fermented, then raised in French and American oak for 24 months. The bottles are then stored in perfect conditions for 36 months ageing, where fruit, oak and acid come together. Here's what James Suckling had to say about the wine: "Aromas of plum and meat with a wet earth and hints of cedar. Medium body, very fine tannins. Juicy and delicious now. Not a big wine but ready and savoury."

Tempraniilo comes from the Rioja region of Spain where it grows in high altitude vineyards with a long growing season. In Australia, the Adelaide Hills region is able to (somewhat) replicate these conditions, and produce wines of dense red and blue fruit, along with the variety’s classic freshness. The palate on this wine is tightly woven with cherry, red currant and blackberries, with a touch of cinnamon too. It’s a medium plus body, with so much class.

This is top-notch Rioja. You can tell just by looking at it. It looks somehow livelier in the glass, more vital and intense. Tempranillo and garnacha make up the mix here (90/10%), singing of juicy cherries and plums. Oak treatment comprises of a 70-30 French-American split, giving darker toasty notes and a background coconuty hint. The wine is deep and complex, but also fun and never too imposing. For fans of the 2016, this new vintage is a touch more concentrated, as it contains declassified barrels of some of their top sites.

This Crianza, crafted with 90% tempranillo and 10% graciano walks and talks Rioja. From the slightly warmer Rioja Oriental subregion, it is classic on the nose with coffee, dark chocolate and spice. The palate mirrors the nose, with the addition of juicy plums, caramel and cedar. A year in American oak gives the wine abundant, grippy tannin and toasty notes of vanilla. Still in a youthful phase, I see this wine mellowing in texture and gaining complexity over the next decade as fruit gives way to more herbaceous characteristics. Fans of old school Rioja will be very pleased with this wine.

Where some of the wines from Toro in Spain’s north-west can be like a charging bull (geddit?!) in structure and style - this sweet little guy is more like Ferdinand. Gentle and soft, with a heart of gold. Made from 100% tinta de Toro (the local name for tempranillo), it’s juicy and ripe with morello cherries, blackberry, spices and abundant, rustic tannins. It’s deliciously fun and doesn’t take life too seriously. If you are a fan of the bold and robust wines that come from Spain, we think you’ll like this trip to Toro.

This is an early-released wine in the ‘joven’ style from Bodegas Forcada in Rioja, who specialise in old vine tempranillo and grenache. Bristling with jubilant cherries and sizzling with exotic spices, it’s perfect for seasoning your snags with every mouthful. 90% tempranillo, filled out with a few splashes of grenache for a bit of plumpness to the palate. Enjoy freely, pour liberally, and laugh heartily!
