Why do we love this case?

Tahbilk are an Australian wine icon and their marsanne, although widely accessible, reaches cult status when it garners some age. Its rich history, special nature and unreal taste are unreplicable. They were named James Halliday’s 2016 Winery of the Year and these aged, old vine bottles of marsanne will give you a little peak into why.

It all started in 1927 on the banks of the central Victoria’s Goulburn River where the Purbrick family planted a marvellous grape called marsanne. Originally from the Rhône region of France, it found a happy home at Tahbilk and now represents the largest and oldest single holding of the variety in the world. And with five generations of experience under their belt, the Purbrick’s are true masters of marsanne who have been awarded some of highest accolades on the planet. We’re talking over 1000 awards, and 50+ trophies, from the world’s principal wine shows.

For the 1927 vines marsanne, fruit is picked early and crafted into pure magic in a bottle. Like the ugly duckling in the classic fairy tale, marsanne needs a little maturity to develop into the breathtaking swan it really is. These wines are textural, complex and graceful, the kind of wines that suck you in and makes you yearn for a second sip before you’ve swallowed the first.

Halliday Special Value Award

From Wine Companion in 2015: "An exceptional wine from 79yo estate vines, the colour still pale quartz-green, the bouquet fragrant, and the palate as fresh as a daisy; crunchy acidity underlies the classic varietal mix of honeysuckle and unsweetened lemon juice."

From Wine Companion in 2016: "Backed up its gold medal at the Sydney Wine Show 14 with a trophy and gold medal this year, Adelaide also awarding gold. Pale green-straw, it is as fresh as a daisy, the long sibilant palate with a perfect mix of honeysuckle and perfectly balanced acidity. It's anyone's guess how long the wine will continue to give such please; the drink to date is a conservative stab in the dark."

From Wine Companion in 2016: "Pale straw-green; perfectly balanced in every respect; honeysuckle and citrus engage like lovers on the bouquet and palate alike. Is even more youthful than semillon or riesling held back for 8 years prior to release. You have to wonder just how long this wine will live for. As it is, it's utterly exceptional."
