Potentially controversial, but the Yarra Valley is Australia's best cabernet producing region. There has always been push and pull as to whether the region is best suited to Burgundian or Bordeaux varietals, but, for me at least, the Yarra Valley can do it all.

Why do we love this case?
These wine's have a history in markets around the world, but the last few years have brought them home to roost, and roost they did - the 2018 and 2019 vintages (the first to go out for domestic review) both earned 95 Point / Gold Halliday reviews. They are exceptional examples of cool climate cabernet, but more so cool climate cabernets capacity to live a long, heathy life. These wines will live forever.
1x Sunshine Creek Ulysses Cabernet Blend 2012
Red — Cabernet Blend
Yarra Valley — Denmark
The dense black and blue fruits of this wines past have evolved into a deeply nuanced, intricate fruit profile that allows you to peel back the layers like petals. Beneath them are all the hallmarks of a wine that's ageing gracefully; game, earth, spice, tobacco, charcoal. There is so much to love, but most of all, for me, it's the potential this wine has. It will go and go and go - cellar for another decade confidently.

1x Sunshine Creek Ulysses Cabernet Blend 2013
Red — Cabernet Blend
Yarra Valley — Denmark
The fruit is still quite flashy here; blood plum and raspberries in a juicy, pulpy, generous way. There is expensive oak in the mix, too. A powerful, brash and imposing example of cool climate cabernet that celebrates bold fruit without veering into unctuous, jammy territory. A delight to drink, and will age further still. I would (and will) revisit this wine one bottle at a time over the next decade.

1x Sunshine Creek Ulysses Cabernet Blend 2014
Red — Cabernet Blend
Yarra Valley — Denmark
The quality of fruit is on show here. You get the full spectrum of red, black, and blue fruit and it dives deep into all of them; raspberries, strawberries, plums, blueberries, currant, cassis, bramble, black cherry... new flashes of fresh fruited goodness revealing themselves as the wine breathes. Beneath that is the classic cabernet styling of tobacco, cedar, twiggy savoury-ness, and spice.

1x Sunshine Creek Ulysses Cabernet Blend 2015
Red — Cabernet Blend
Yarra Valley — Denmark
Bramble and cassis at the fore. Juicy, plush, and bristling with full tannins. There is powerful, premium oak framing the fruit profile, and a baseline of mineral complexity peeking through. This is seriously premium, seriously full-throttle stuff. Bright, lifted, energetic cool climate cabernet.

1x Sunshine Creek Ulysses Cabernet Blend 2017
Red — Cabernet Blend
Yarra Valley — Denmark
I love this wine for its gnarled, pulpy fruit beset against the stylish oak treatment and the ripe tannin structure. Big and brash and packin' heat; this is a wine for lovers of all things overt. The fruit is grounded in the blacks and the blues - plum, blueberry, black cherry - but it's all so beautifully developed without losing taut acidity and freshness. This is a wine to be looked at and enjoyed form many years to come.

1x Sunshine Creek Ulysses Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Red — Cabernet Sauvignon
Yarra Valley — Denmark
Overwhelmingly cabernet with a little under 1/10 Malbec for good measure. New french oak gives plushness and shape, the density of the fruit (and the quality) gives drive, power, and grunt. A swirl of red and blue fruit at the fore, earth, spice, tobacco, and cedar follow quickly behind. This is stylish and finessed cabernet, as the cooler Yarra Valley is want to produce, and that bit of elegance is welcome - it pulls on the reigns of what is otherwise a full force, full bodied, beast of a wine.
