From the oldest vines on Ulithorne’s estate vineyard comes this dark and deep Vale shiraz. Great drainage in the sand-over-clay soil sets the stage for excellent concentration of flavour, presenting as blackberry, cherry, plum and spice. Twenty months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak rounds out the package with fine-grained tannins and a subtle cedary influence on the back palate. This is classic Vale old vine shiraz, inky and smooth, deep and complex.

Wrattonbully brings the goods when it comes to cabernet. It’s that red clay and loam soil that’s the key. We’ve got our hands on a single vineyard example that’s been given heaps of love by Carillion. Despite its medium body, it’s quite ripe with flavours of cassis and blackberry. Low cropping levels and small berries have led to great concentration and some time in French oak has given the wine a nice spicy backbone and fine tannins.

Yet another exceptional chardonnay from Riversdale Estate out of the Coal River Valley. It’s an excellent example of this variety from the island, with fresh tropical and floral notes on the nose followed by stone fruits, passionfruit, gooseberry and more citrus on the palate. It’s fresh, crisp and concentrated, making for some great drinking. We’re a bit picky about our Tassie chardy here at the ‘Fo, but this one definitely makes the grade.

Brightwater is one of our favourite little producers out of Nelson on the South Island of New Zealand. This is their Te Kāhu pinot, a wine that honours the native carrier hawk of that same name. It’s quite supple with a savoury undertone and dark cherry on the fruit side. A touch of French oak adds structure and helps make for a long finish. Nelson always punches well above its weight, and this juicy number from one of the regions best boutique wineries is a perfect example of that.

Fresh out of the 2021 vintage, this wine comes from selected parcels from across the Clare Valley and according to Kevin is "an ode to Mort Mitchell’s Sharegarden that he managed when he was a much younger man!". As you can imagine - the wine is superb!

Château Peyre-Lebade is a domaine under the umbrella of Barons de Rothschild Lafite. Yes, THAT Rothschild Lafite. We’re talking about Bordeaux royalty here, a group that has been such a huge part of the region’s history and status. This merlot-dominant red from Haut-Médoc is deep purple in the glass, expressing plum, blackcurrant and cherry on the nose, and adding caramel, vanilla and licorice on the palate. Classic Bordeaux that’s drinking well now from a name synonymous with the region.

Here’s Kellybrook, one of the Yarra’s longest tenured producers, showing us just what they can do with shiraz. From older vines, the fruit spends a year in French oak after fermentation. It sits more on the medium-bodied side with plum, cherry, pepper and spice leading the charge, giving way to violets, olive tapenade and a bit of earthiness. Easy drinking yet full of complexity, an expression of how well the Yarra Valley can craft Australia’s national grape into a delicious wine.

Wow! That is an insane amount of gold medals! And this is an insanely good wine, made by our mates and absolute industry leaders (and legends) at De Bortoli. Botrytis semillon is a world renowned style and this local example sets the bar very high. You can expect all the tropical fruit, toasty-nutty oak and creamy, chocolatey flavours the best botrytis dessert wines rock. But there’s supreme balance and freshness, which is the key to truly great sweet wine. Everything in abundance, and nothing out of place.
