Why do we love this case?

Ladies and gentlemen, please be upstanding for the American wine-lovers’ anthem:

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we sniffed, slurped, swirled and quaffed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose bright fruit and toasty oak, through the perilous night,
With the courses we devour’d were so gallantly pairing?
From the rocket salad’s crunch, to dessert’s poached pear,
Proved to us through the night that our appetite was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled chardy fill today
The glass of the free and the belly of the brave?

Every box contains one of each of these bottles of freedom-juice:

If this is your first foray into US chardy, and you’re looking for something distinctly American tasting - this is it. It’s a big, rich, buttery style, generous in flavour and complexity, that’s nonetheless very well balanced. The bottle may have travelled a great way, but it’s not such a leap for the palate as to be challenging for Aussies. There’s plenty that’s recognisable if you like Margs, for example, but it’s also different enough to make for a bloody exciting experience. It’s a hands-down cracking investment for the future, too. Top critics give this as much at a decade of cellar potential, so there’s no rush to put it to use.

Best Young Sommelier in America 2003 - Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs
USA Import

Pitch-perfect Oregon chardonnay from André Mack, the man voted America’s Best Young Sommelier. After ditching the finance industry for the winemaking, André has gone from strength to strength making wine and some of the best labels in the game to boot! (He’s actually gone on to found a graphic design company based on the success of his label designs… multi-talented sod!) This stuff is very hard to come by. Only 600 cases are made a year, and naturally the vast majority of that gets guzzled in the states. ‘fo buyer, Ben Goodman, had to fight tooth and nail to get some sent to this country, so you can mail your thanks in later. If you love a leaner, fresh style of chardonnay, with a focus on elegance and nuance, this’ll be just the ticket. It’ll age prodigiously, but it’s looking very, very good already.

The trouble, I’ve found, with a lot of big, butterball Cali chardy is that it can be a bit unwieldy as a pairing. This, on the other hand, solves the problem with elegance. Jamie Kutch takes Burgundy as his inspiration, making old world style pinot and chardy. And this is all the more versatile for it. You can drink this with everything from seafood to roast chicken, salad to pastry and it’ll be nothing short of stunning. Plus, not having 800kg of butter rammed into the bottle leaves more room for nuance to come through with time. This’ll age beautifully, so there’s no need to rush. It’ll take on even more gravitas at the dinner table after some years. Particularly when Jamie Kutch becomes a household name in very fine wine, and you pull out a dusty old bottle of this, aged to absolute perfection.
