Halliday Wine Companion
Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery

When you want to spice things up and try something a little more exotic, viognier provides the answer. With the floral aromatics of riesling combined with the texture of chardonnay, viognier is often called the red drinker’s white because of its extra body and complexity. It’s a tricky beast in the vineyard - but in the glass - wow! This one from Known Pleasures has floral elements and five-spice combining with apricot kernels and gentle ginger. The palate kicks on with an enticing slippery texture, while still finishing with fine citrus acidity. It’s easy to see how this style can handle a chilli kick. Take your pick with Indian tandoori chicken, Sichuan dishes, Vietnamese pho or spicy char kway teow.

Halliday Wine Companion
Single Vineyard

Getting your mittens on a savvy bee that ‘stands out from the pack’ is a rewarding experience. We all want those classic tropical, grassy and zippy citrusy elements that we’ve come to enjoy; but the winemakers at Vintage Longbottom have gone the extra mile to make this single vineyard drop a memorable beverage. A cheeky 5 months in French oak puncheons and some lees work provide a luscious oily texture unique to others. 2018 had a warmer than average autumn which brings about a ripeness over the palate and balances beautifully with the naturally retained acidity. This really is a notch up from your every day quaffing sauvignon blancs, but still well within an affordable price range.

This wine if from the TIKI estate range, sourced from across their Wairarapa estate in Marlborough. TIKI is a proud founding member of TUKU, the world’s first Māori winemaker’s collective, a group who share values of the land, family and hospitality. Their care for the land is evident in the wonderful wines they craft. This is classic Kiwi gris, with a bit more power, body and richness. Bellvale are a small Gippsland producer with a very large following of their very smart wines. Their chardonnay is quite rich and has a leesy, nutty character that is balanced by vibrant acidity. It's the kind of wine to put in a big glass and watch unfold as a bit of time and air show a particularly detailed wine. An estate chardonnay from Bellvale. The yellow flesh of stonefruit, the honeyed tones of oak, ribbons of citrus to tie it all up. A dry chalkiness to the finish almost throws the balance out but style- and flavour-wise this sits in a good place.
