Why do we love this case?

This little lineup shows off three of Spain’s native varieties from three producers we absolutely love. Tempranillo and mencía which we all know as Spanish - but also grenache or garnacha as they call it, which comes from the Aragon region in northern Spain. All medium-bodied, full of fruit and begging to be matched with the finest Spanish fare.

Each pack contains ONE of the following:

Valserrano (formally Valserrano Viñedos y Bodegas de la Marquesa) are repping the ladies with this wine - La Marquesa - a 100% tempranillo showing off the prettier side of the grape. The young(ish) wine is bright, and lively, with good acidity and a lot of fruit. Made from tempranillo grapes grown in their Rioja Alavesa vineyards, it’s aged for 12 months in mainly used oak barrels to preserve aromas and not encumber the fruit. It’s full of light tannins, alongside a medium palate of cherry, cola and herbs, closing with a moreish finish.

Next door to La Rioja, in the cool north of Spain lies the region of Navarra. Where tempranillo shines in Rioja, garnacha (or grenache) is the star of Navarra. Young vines go into rosé and once the vines have matured, they make deep, layered, velvety reds. The Cabrito Oscuro comes for a collection of old sites, high on mountains, where a long season allows the grapes to gain flavour and complexity, while retaining freshness. Ripe plums and blackberries beam from the glass, followed by aniseed spice and a touch of toasty oak. This is full-bodied, full-flavour and very easy to like.

This is the fourth vintage of mencía from Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo that we have worked with, and their wines are just getting better and better. I used to compare Bierzo’s indigenous mencía grape to gamay, but the more I drink, the more I realise that it’s a dark and powerful grape, capable of making deep and serious wines. This estate wine from Merayo is a small window into the power of the mencía grape, designed for immediate drinking. The wine comes from bush vines on the slopes and valley floor of Bierzo - with stoney clay soil bringing power that backs the aromatics of the mencía grape, along with cool nights for acid. It’s intense on both the nose and palate, but sitting firmly in medium-bodied territory. There is a floral note, heaps of plums, cranberries and a touch of spice. It has a long and persistent finish, hinting at the power you will find in some of their top wines.
