Why do we love this case?

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane. The wine from Spain gets guzzled by mofos.

These two facts alone speak volumes. Ok, not so much the first one, though it will be useful if you ever work on your elocution. The second should be a clue as to how much we adore these kind of Iberian wonders here at the ‘fo. You’d be hard pressed to top the price and quality of wines we’ve seen from Spain over the years. They’re made of many of our favourite grapes, so feel close enough for comfort. But that Spanish sun and tantalising terroir gives them an exotic edge that means every mouthful is a journey.  Grab a box of these rockin’ reds and taste for yourself!

Please note: Some of the Cerro Añon labels maaaaay have a slight stain... the wine itself is fine, but the label may have some vino on it. Put it down to overenthusiastic warehouse mofoloompahs. They may have had a smashing time, but you’ll have more fun than them with the wine in your glass.

Every case contains two of each of the following:

Cerro Añón Crianza 2016

Plum

Medium-bodied

This ‘crianza’ level red comes from a blend of the three main subregions of the Rioja zone. The blend of subregions allows for a delightful mosaic of flavour and texture, sourcing richness from the warmer, lower altitudes and racecar drive from the cooler heights. Following 14-16 months of maturation in American oak barrels, this delicious Spaniard now bears all the hallmarks of a classic of the style. Think deep, dark cherries, with dribble-inducing fruit sweetness and depth of flavour, imbued with coconut and vanillin notes from the American oak for gorgeous opulence. There’s structure for ageing in abundance, but it’s so damn delicious that, frankly, we’d like to see you try.

Hand-picked wine

From one of the most exciting up-and-coming winemaking hotspots in Spain, Campo de Borja, this is a hand-picked bush vine grenache that’s more fun than a bouncy castle at your school fête. Bright and fruity it’s zinging with raspberries and sour cherry, juicy vibrance and soft, easy-drinking edges. Not too light, not too heavy, extremely satisfying.

Sam Kim
5 Stars Sam Kim

This crazy cat is at the very cutting edge of Rioja’s new wave of wonderful wines! Far from the dusty leather armchair wines most associated with the region, this is young, racy and basically decked out in go-faster stripes. It’s for a young-at-heart crowd, bright, juicy and exuberant. It’s the kind of wine that screams fun and is gonna rub off on all your guests. It tastes like a vino well above the price bracket, though deftly avoids stuffiness of any kind. Raucously red fruited, with a generous dollop of French and American oak, it’s prepped to party as soon as that cork is popped. And imagine casually serving funky new-wave Rioja, just as your house red. How f*@!ing cool are you?!

Meet Fred. Not the most exotic name for a Spanish wine, granted, but who are we to judge. It’s not like it’s his fault anyway. Fred’s a fun guy. Known to his mates as the “Spanish Beaujolais”, it’s easy to see why on first meeting. Bright and juicy, crunchy and herbaceous, lively red fruits and a spicy finish. He’s equal parts carignan and fun - quite impressive when you consider he’s 100% of each. It’s hard to find something delicious at this price full stop, let alone from halfway across the planet. We like Fred. Fred can stay.

Tintoralba Organic Garnacha 2017

Garnacha tintorera, to be exact. The lesser-known sibling of good ol’ grenache that’s red to the very core. It’s a ‘teinturier’ grape, meaning not only are the skins dark, but also (unusually) the flesh. This results in a dark, rich, plush wine like few others. Super-fruity and exploding with juiciness, there’s nevertheless a good herby crunch for interest and balance. The colour may look like a storm cloud, but the flavour’s a beautiful summer’s day. The weather in this part of the world allows for organic grape-growing practices, too. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then matured in oak barrels, Tintorabla have managed to find the perfect balance between preserving that stunning fruit purity, and imbuing the wine with depth and interest.

When you consider the price of this Spanish sensation, you begin to see why we’re so ecstatic to have another vintage back at the ‘fo. The bang for your buck here is nothing short of atomic. Explosively juicy fruits abound on the palate; crunchy herbs and tangy bitter orange add Negroni-like complexity. It’s the kind of wine to drink when you’re having too much fun to take tasting notes. It lives for smiles, joy and laughter, and gives back in equal measure. Whether you quaff it from a wine glass or a mug, it’s still the same devilishly delicious experience every time. Be warned: you’ll find yourself thinking up excuses to take a bottle of this to every event, get-together or shindig you can.
