Adega Mãe Arinto 2018
Medium-bodied
Round
Concentrated

Arinto is one of Portugal's great white varieties, forming the backbone of blends and also stunning varietal wines. This wine from the Lisbon region has a mineral nose with highlights of lemon and sea-spray. It has a light body, with an oily texture, and is quite savoury with citrus and golden delicious apple. Medium acid, long and moreish and a bit of a new world meets old world vibe.

#34 Best Wine Buys of 2021, Wine Enthusiast

The wine is bright and fruity on the nose with citrus, fresh sweet herbs and a slight mealy note. Lively and acidic on the palate, but with generous fruit, it’s medium-bodied with tonnes of character and nervy acid. The finish is long with green apple, sour apricot and blueberries. Any aromatic white drinker would love this.

Albariño is synonymous with Rías Baixas, in the cold green province of Galicia, still Spain, just above Portugal. It is a wine defined by the Atlantic. The vineyards it grows in are shaped by cooling sea breezes, with enough sun to get the berries perfectly ripe. The flavour, too, speaks of the sea. This is slatey and creamy, like succulent shellfish, with a delightful salinity. A squeeze of citrus keeps everything fresh and lively, while sunny peachy flavours flesh out the palate for a smooth, round finish. It’s beyond perfect with seafood, and a quintessential food wine, that is also dangerously drinkable on its own.

I'm not sure what I like more - the rad label for this wine, the quirky blend of palomino and treixadura, or the spunky Spanish exporter who sells it (Hi Agustin!). The three make a magic combo, but what is the wine like? It has one foot in grigio and the other in albariño - light, bright, easy to like and at home on a picnic rug.

This blend of 65% loureiro and 35% arinto is full of fruit, light on its feet and just begging to be drunk with seafood. Both local grapes, they combine to make a floral, citric and very yummy drop. I'm thinking grilled calamari, sardines on toast or vine-leaf-wrapped garfish. YUM!

Super Trendy

‘Vino Verde’ or green wine is named after the region from which it comes. It’s young white wine that is produced in the cold north and drunk country-wide as a match with their also famous seafood. There’s a bit of a spritz upon opening and the wine is light and bright, herbaceous and a bit grassy. Imagine riesling meets sauv blanc. It’s a great, refreshing style for anytime, not overly fruity, but rather minerally and textural and would play a wonderful supporting role with food. It’s a touch lighter than many whites at 10.5% alcohol - perfect for a long lunch.
