Why do we love this case?

Ah Spain! And its proud neighbour Portugal. Amazing contributors to world of wine in their own rights, but when you combine them - that’s when the magic happens. This pack of six wines covers the Iberian peninsula and is a small step into the wondrous world of their wines. All red, all delicious. With the colder months approaching, this pack covers Spanish superstar tempranillo and the classic Portuguese blends. Salud! Saude!

Burgo Viejo is a property jointly owned by six families of grape growers. For ages they sold off most of their harvest, but have started making wine under their own label of late. We are very excited they’ve made that decision. Despite the fact that their little pocket of Rioja is planted more to garnacha, Burgo Viejo has focused on the more high-profile tempranillo. In an effort to describe the wine, I’ve enlisted the work of Decanter’s Simon Field MW, who is much better at writing than I am. In his review, he states, ‘Intense colour, powerful aromas of tar and blue fruit; minty savoury, rich, lifted and long; an impressive reserva statement of intent.’ Yeah, that’s what I meant to say.

Silver Medal Mundusvini, Germany 2018

Portugal’s red wines are no long under the radar on the international wine scene, with wine lovers the world over reaching for their food-friendly, robust reds. This wine from the famous Quinta Nova is a great place to start if you haven’t already, with a blend of touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz and tinta cão. This is their unoaked wine, so what you are seeing is pure fruit power, and my is it powerful. Sitting right on the border of medium and full-bodied, this wine is full of flavour and generosity. It’s rich, ripe and robust with a basket of fresh blueberry muffins jumping out the glass, interwoven with cinnamon and spice. The palate is fleshy and fun with deeper black cherry notes with refreshing acidity.

I have written at the bottom of my tasting note for this wine, “Aussies will love this”. It’s from a winery and region new to the ‘fo - Adega Mãe, which is based north of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. Portuguese reds are known to pack a punch and what makes the Adega Mãe wines so compelling is the influence of the cooling Atlantic, bringing freshness and minerality. But don’t worry, there is heaps of punchy fruit. This red blend is medium-bodied and full of dark berries, and a beautiful balance of savoury and sweet notes. It reminds me of Mencía but more generous and quite plush. Aussies WILL love this.

This is the third vintage of mencía from Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo that we have worked with, and their wines are just getting better and better. I used to compare Bierzo’s indigenous mencía grape to gamay, but the more I drink, the more I realise that it’s a dark and powerful grape, capable of making deep and serious wines. This estate wine from Merayo is a small window into the power of the mencía grape, designed for immediate drinking. The wine comes from classic bush vines on the slopes and valley floor of Bierzo - with stoney clay soil bringing power that backs the aromatics of the mencía grape and cool nights for acid. It’s intense on both the nose and palate, but sitting firmly in medium-bodied territory. There is a floral note, heaps of plums, cranberries and a touch of spice. It has a long and persistent finish, hinting at the power you will find in some of their top wines.

This is an early-released wine in the ‘joven’ style from Bodegas Forcada in Rioja, who specialise in old vine tempranillo and grenache. Bristling with jubilant cherries and sizzling with exotic spices, it’s perfect for seasoning your snags with every mouthful. 90% tempranillo, filled out with a few splashes of grenache for a bit of plumpness to the palate. Enjoy freely, pour liberally, and laugh heartily!

Welcome back delicious red wine!!! When you consider the price of this Spanish sensation, you begin to see why we’re so ecstatic to have another vintage at the ‘fo. The bang for your buck here is nothing short of atomic. Explosively juicy fruits abound on the palate; crunchy herbs and tangy bitter orange add complexity. It’s the kind of wine to drink whether you quaff it from a wine glass or a mug. It’s still the same devilishly delicious experience every time. Medium-bodied with heaps of fruit, a nice bit of spice and bit of Iberian exoticism.
