Why do we love this case?

Ah Spain! And its proud neighbour Portugal. Amazing contributors to world of wine in their own rights, but when you combine them - that’s when the magic happens. This pack of six wines covers the Iberian peninsula and is a small step into the wondrous world of their wines. All red, all delicious. With the colder months approaching, this pack covers Spanish superstar tempranillo, mataro and grenache (both likely familiar to Aussies) and a couple of more unusual wines - graciano and a Portuguese blend. Salud! Saude!

Each case contains ONE bottle of:

Red
Tempranillo
Ribera del Duero

Cillar de Silos 'Joven' Tempranillo 2017
Cherry
Raspberry
Spice
Medium-bodied
Firm
Bold

Cillar de Silos have been making tinto fino (the local name for tempranillo) for 25 years under their own label, after the classic story of growing grapes and selling to a local co-op for a long time before. This wine a great gateway into temp and the premium region of Ribera del Duero. Unencumbered by oak, you will find bright fruit and a generous palate. If you are lucky, you may taste the elusive cherry-cola, that the variety is know to have.

Biurko Gorri, that's quite an exotic name, you may be thinking. And graciano. What is that? Firstly, Biurko Gorri means ‘from two red rivers” in Basque language - the autonomous region in northern Spain which is home to most of the famed Rioja region. Rioja - now we may be talking your language! Graciano is often used as a blending variety with tempranillo and garnacha (grenache) generally taking centre-stage. It's deeply coloured and brooding with graphite shavings shaping the wine. Definitely the most unfamiliar wine in this pack and we think you'll like the step into the unknown.

Grenache
Campo de Borja DO

Legado del Moncayo Garnacha 2017
Earthy
Redcurrant
Spice
Medium-bodied
Firm
Bold

From an unheralded wine-growing region comes an exciting grenache. Cherries and Mediterranean herbs with a jolt of acid, owing to its relatively high altitude (600m). This is not your old-vine Rioja (or Barossa) to keep in the cellar and wait to drink - this is the kind of grenache with freshness and life and we think the time is now. The palate is firm and the fruit is fresh as a daisy.

Biurko Gorri Rioja Tempranillo 2017
Black Cherry
Blueberry
Nutmeg
Medium-bodied
Bright
Bold

Another wine from our current favourite Basque producer, Biurko Gorri. This time the more familiar, but never boring, tempranillo. Another delicious joven (young) wine - crunchy and vibrant, where fruit plays the lead role. You can expect red and black fruits, bold in flavour but light on it's feet.

Douro

Lavradores de Feitoria Douro Tinto 2016
Blood Plum
Chocolate
Licorice
Full-bodied
Firm
Bold

Portugal's contribution to the pack comes from the acclaimed Douro region in the north. It's touriga franca dominant (50%), with tinta roriz, touriga nacional and tinta barroca. A few years in bottle have rounded out the palate and the fruit is sitting well amongst a bit of tannin, which was all fruit, not oak-derived. Douro without the makeup. Earthy, plummy and generous.

Almuvedre Monastrell 2018

First things first, this wine is made by the Spanish winemaking sensation Telmo Rodriguez. Telmo has many fingers in many pies throughout Spain, working with growers with old-vine material and championing autochthonous varieties. This juicy number from Alicante, in the southeast, near to the Med has a juicy plusness as well as Monastrell's (Mourvèdre) characteristic meaty character. Just add BBQ.
