Red Winemaker of the Year - International Wine Challenge

“So we’re going all the way to the Languedoc-Roussillon region which is not, I suppose, a classic region of France like Bordeaux or Burgundy, but it’s an incredible value region. Now this particular one comes from a subregion called Saint-Chinian, which is probably the most highly sought after area. What you get there is just a little bit more elegance from an otherwise pretty rich, pretty round and pretty hearty red wine. ” – Eddie, The Wine Guy

Robert Parker
French import

This ‘15 Frenchy hails from the South but will feel right at home in your mouth. It’s a full-bodied vino, a heavyweight champ that clocked up 93 points from Robert Parker to match its dark, jammy fruits. Spice, herbs, cherries mix in the glass, creating a “deep and layered” wine with “incredible texture”. Parker reckons he’d gladly pay three to four times the going rate, but we’ve managed to halve that rate for you mofos so go forth and prosper properly – with an armful of wine.

Domaine Courtois are a family-owned estate now headed by Pascal and Richard, who took over from their father Claude (so bloody French), and it seems the future is in very decent hands. This blend of grenache and syrah is repping an amazingly high review for its price. There’s a cheeky little dash of mourvèdre in there too and it really is cracking, cracking booze, rated 91 points by Robert Parker. Lots of dark berry fruits accompany soft tannins and a good amount of acidity. It is, as Parker says, simply a “a wine of good structure with good Southern Rhône characters.”

A belter of a vintage means a belter of a wine, and they don’t come much better than Southern Rhône in 2016. Though sometimes regarded as a little brother of the Châteauneuf du Pape, the Côtes du Rhône Villages wine is less a shadow than it is a mirror – reflecting a bright, burning, vino goodness. Dark fruited with peppery goodness, this is a medium-bodied vino with beautiful fruit and a fantastic finish. Silky smooth with sumptuous French style, a glass of this grenache blend will do wonders for your next feast. Lamb, beef, stew – it’s up to you. And it’s all good, mofos, it’s all good.

A blend of syrah and grenache, this vino is dark with aromas of black fruits. It’s full of blackcurrant, cherry and liquorice flavours, a balanced and refreshing wine that’ll make you feel a little French, a little fancy and a little thankful that it’s such crazy value. After all, Wine Advocate said these are “wines practically in a class by themselves for value”. A big call perhaps, but with 93 points from Robert Parker this is a pretty big wine.

We love an underdog story here at the ‘Fo, and the Cave de Roquebrun crew winning Red Winemaker of the Year is right up there with J.K Rowling writing Harry Potter and Leicester winning the Premier League. After bagging a whole heap of other awards (too many to list here), the big wine dogs that be began taking notice of this boutique southern France wine team. And they loved what they found. Like this gold medal-winning, spicy, earthy, bright shiraz blend.
