Why do we love this case?

With a South American roadtrip off the cards these days, we thought we’d bring the journey to you in the form of six wonderful wines. Starting in the cooler climate of Chile, with one of their best pinot noirs, it’s then across the Andres for a collection of Argentine reds that ranges from vibrant to powerful. This journey will be many things, but it will not be boring!

Each case contains ONE of the following:

#4 Wine in Wine Enthusiast Top 100 for 2020

If you follow the Argentine wine scene at all, you’ll know the name Catena. Laura Catena is the fourth generation of the family to grow malbec and Luca is her artisan brand. So we’re already starting with wine royalty here. Throw in some buzzworthy stats like 50-year old vines and vineyards at over 1000 metres above sea level, and you’re onto something exciting. And to really tie a bow on the whole package, this malbec was named the #4 wine in Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 for 2020. It doesn’t get much better than that. Deep in colour and loaded with spice and fruit, this malbec is already drinking well. You’ll find black and red cherries, chocolate and espresso on the palate, along with quite lively acidity and a tannin structure that’ll allow it to age well for a few more years. With a family history as interwoven with malbec as that of the Catena’s, you’d expect nothing less.

Gold Decanter

This is small batch stuff, fermented with indigenous yeast, and aged carefully in large format third-use French oak. In other words, let the fruit speak for itself! We’re not the only ones who have taken notice of this exciting South American pinot project, as evidenced by exceptional reviews from Tim Atkin MW and Decanter. Check out what Decanter had to say: “Now this is special! herbs. The palate is perfectly pitched, boasting a core of vibrant energy, simultaneously crunchy and gently bittersweet. Food-friendly with great potential for development.”

Red Winemaker of the Year IWC 2018
Argentine Wine Producer Trophy IWSC 2017

Mendoza’s master of malbec, Hevré J Fabre, returns with none other than his flagship wine. Aged in 100% new French oak, this is not for the faint-hearted - not quite a tooth-tinting tannin titan but not meek, either. Tannins are full and drying, sure, but also soft and smooth, tamed by a dark-fruited core of berries, cocoa and balancing acidity. This is overlaid with pretty florals and herbaceousness that only seem to add to its overall density and power. It certainly does remind you that Fabre’s roots are from Bordeaux - a nod to the malbec-based black wines of Cahors. Savoury through and through but rounded out by distinctively punchy high altitude Mendoza fruit. Approachable, but much to think about, too. Over a fat steak, of course.

Old Vine

Not too far outside of the CBD of Mendoza is an area called Luján de Cuyo. Within Luján de Cuyo lies Vistalba, one of the best places to grow old vine malbec in the entire world. Much of it is nearly dry-grown with the only irrigation coming in fortnightly releases of water from the nearby Mendoza River. It gets so hot and dry there that every drop matters. These old vines and extreme growing conditions provide grapes of unparalleled concentration. In the right hands, like those of Argentine Winemaker of the Year Hervé Fabre, the resulting wines are spellbinding. This one is 100% malbec and completely hand-harvested. 60% of the juice sees 12 months in French oak. This allows for some nice tannic structure without overpowering the bright fruit so indicative of Mendoza malbec. In the glass, you’ll find cherries, spices, vanilla, chocolate and sweet silky tannins. What a treat!

Descorchados
Single Vineyard

This malbec sourced from the Fazzio vineyard for this wine comes from more recent plantings on the land. Half of the wine spends time in second use French oak with the remaining portion resting in tank to preserve the brightness of the fruit. The nose is vibrant and bursting with cherries and plums before giving way to more floral notes such as violets and roses. The palate carries both chocolate and vanilla, along with a nice spicy complexity and bold tannin structure. Check out what James Suckling had to say: “This has such interesting, sweet and fragrant, violet-like florals with rich purple fruit and a faint, stony edge. The palate is very plush and rich and the velvety tannins carry so long and even. Black-cherry and cocoa-powder finish. A more serious vintage for this wine. Drink or hold.”

Argentine Red Winemaker of the Year 2017

What’s a Port grape doing in a wine like this? I’ll tell you what. It’s giving malbec an added lift (as if it needed it) so the aromatics are stratospheric. Touriga is a lifted variety anyway, and its role as a blending component is generally to boost aroma, add a bit of spice and pepper, along with some round, chunky tannins. Given Mendoza malbec’s propensity for full mid-palate purple fruit smoothness, these two dance very well together. Decanter was so impressed, they adorned it in platinum. 45 years of vine age on the malbec and careful hand-selection have helped propel this wine to these heights (the actual vineyard altitude helps too, obviously). This wine’s high in so many ways. Elevate your wine drinking, and reset your new normal. You can thank us later.
