These are some of the best white wines to be found in the Rainbow nation. It’s not often you get to taste the absolute cream of the crop straight off the bat, but when we we’re looking to import a boatful of brilliance, we don’t do half measures. These six beauties from cult wineries are spoken about in hushed fervour even back home in South Africa, let alone overseas where they’re even rarer. They’re yours to enjoy, mofo, and enjoy them you will!
Each case contains ONE bottle of the following:

Metzer Family Wines started back in 2006 with a focus on minimal intervention. All fruit is sustainably grown, the winery runs only on gravity rather than pumping, indigenous yeast is used in fermentation and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This chenin comes from a bush vine block planted back in 1964. Following nine months on lees in seasoned French oak, it was bottled as is, nothing left behind. Aromas of apple, hay and ginger abound, leading to a textural palate with evident minerality and citrusy acid. As stands with all great chenin, you can drink it now or lay it down for up to a decade.

Metzer's Maritime chenin comes from a bush vine block that was planted back in the '80's only four kms from False Bay. Fermentation took place in seasoned French oak, followed by nine months on lees before bottling. Look for pear, peach and lemon on the nose, brilliant acidity on the palate and a touch of spice and orange blossom on the finish. Tim Atkin (95pts) and Winemag (96pts) both heaped praise upon this stunner. We'll get in line to sing our praises about it, too.

Donovan Rall is some sort of South African wine sorcerer. Everything he touches turns to delicious. Vinified mostly in concrete egg, with the rest going into amphorae, clearly a bit of thought has gone into the making of it. The nose is bright with lemon and fragrant herbs. The palate is light, tight and concentrated, the low alcohol level leaving more room for flavour. Tangy fruit gets catapulted by a spunky acidity before finishing with a delightful savoury edge.

Named after Franco’s wife Lindi, this white blend of chenin, verdelho and grenache blanc, is all hand harvested, fermented separately, and then sent to large format French oak for nine months. The nose elicits aromas of pear, nectarine, orange and lemon, along with a bit of herbal tones and flintiness. The citrus-driven palate has a creamy texture, a feel of wet stone and fine acidity on the finish. This is a prime example of why South Africa is so renowned for its white blends.

Perhaps you’re like many Aussies who have experienced very little wine from South Africa. Perhaps you have, but you’ve not yet had any from Elgin. Or perhaps, you know exactly what we’re talking about when we say that these wines- whether it be chenin, chardonnay, riesling or savvy b- will stop you in your tracks. Winemaker for Spioenkop Koen Roose has said “The Elgin area is the future gold of the Western Cape” and it is objectively true. Surrounded almost entirely by mountains, the area experiences cooler temperatures than those neighbouring, and is producing simply marvelous wines. In true South African style, this wine undergoes a barrel fermentation and 9 months in French oak (30% new). It’s serving all the deepness of the oak, with elegant acidy and purity of fruit. The finish continues delivering, with wonderfully nutty, toasty savouriness that will enhance the wine with age. Go on, see for yourself. You’ll be a convert from the first sip. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Rüdger van Wyk grew up in a small town along the Karatara river, three hours outside of Cape Town. He caught the wine bug from his older brother, a winemaker, and inherited a love of all things gardening from his father. The 2018 Diner’s Club Young Winemaker of the Year draws inspiration from Burgundy when crafting his wines, sourcing fruit from a variety of cool climate growers. This chardonnay comes from two vineyards, located in Paarl and Overberg. There’s lemon and grapefruit providing the citrus element, with almond notes and fine minerality on the finish. Nine months on lees in seasoned oak has built texture and weight into the wine without imparting cedary characteristics. We’re extremely excited to offer Rüdger’s wines for the first time in Australia. Don’t miss your chance to check out a rising star in the South African wine scene.
