Donovan Rall is the South African grape whisperer who doesn’t make much wine, but what he does turn out is flabbergasting. This is one of the best white blends of the Southern Hemisphere, according to our buyer, John. It’s a blend of chenin, verdelho and viognier, perfectly weighted to complement each other and bring out the best qualities of each. Sizzling with complexity and shimmering with vibrance, it’s little wonder these Rall wines have built a ferociously dedicated cult following over the years.

Powerhouse duo David and Nadia are taking South Africa (and the WORLD) by storm with their new age approach to winemaking. Not only do they produce incredible wines, they follow organic and ecological farming practises and minimal intervention in the winery, which ensures their wines reflect their land. Spending a year in old oak, this chenin blanc is complex, well-structured and displays fleshy deliciousness with each sip. With a fresh palate of tropical fruits, citrus and all spice, this white beauty has a long and minerally finish.

This blend of roussanne, semillon, chenin blanc, chardonnay and clairette blanche is “beautifully balanced and offering layers and layers of flavour” according to reviewer Christian Eedes and we think it is simply magic! This is a carefully-calculated mosaic of ripe, supple fruit, with pitch-perfect texture and just the right weight of richness. Think white and yellow peach, with gentle spice and a hint of brioche. This wine is the result of some of the very finest fruit combined with inconceivably masterful winemaking. Not only does it offer a truly unique flavour profile that can’t really be found anywhere else, but the quality is laid bare with every sip for all to see.

Aristargos is a complex and structured white blend - big and bold, but balanced - with nectarines, citrus pith and honey suckle, and a minerally finish. Aged in French oak barrels, the wine has a great texture and long finish. I’m not sure I can pin-point all of the varieties in this epic blend, but I know they are all adding a little something to make a very special wine.

This wine is a masterpiece of winemaking, with perfectly-judged brushstrokes of interest applied to lovely fruit. Half of it was matured in 400L barrels, with the rest sitting in stainless steel, for nine months. This gives a gorgeous richness of texture to the bright palate of green apple, pear and minerality, backed by just a hint of brioche.

This is an elemental wine. South Africa is defined by careful balance. Hot sun and cool coastal breezes, the changing of the seasons, the passing of time. You can sense all this at work here. Heady tangerine and citrus blossom meet rich vanilla pod and almond flakes. It’s as fragrant as spring, ripe as summer, ephemeral as autumn and crisp as winter. The best thing, though, is its versatility. It’s absolutely perfect to take to dinner, particularly when you don’t know what’s on the menu. The fresh acid will pair beautifully with bright dishes, but there’s enough richness to sit well with heavier fare.
