Why do we love this case?

These are some of the best white wines to be found in the Rainbow nation. It’s not often you get to taste the absolute cream of the crop straight off the bat, but when we we’re looking to import a boatful of brilliance, we don’t do half measures. These six beauties from cult wineries are spoken about in hushed fervour even back home in South Africa, let alone overseas where they’re even rarer. They’re yours to enjoy, mofo, and enjoy them you will!

Donovan Rall is the South African grape whisperer and we are thrilled to have another vintage of this acclaimed white blend. He doesn’t make much wine, but what he does turn out is flabbergasting. This is one of the best white blends of the Southern Hemisphere, according to our buyer, John. It’s a blend of chenin, verdelho and viognier, perfectly weighted to complement each other and bring out the best qualities of each. Sizzling with complexity and shimmering with vibrance, it’s little wonder these Rall wines have built a ferociously dedicated cult following over the years.

Botanica are a South African producer with a cult following and their chenin blanc has gained the attention of the wine press world over. Tim Atkin describes it as ‘focused, pithy, taut and intense’ and we couldn’t agree more. This is next-level chenin blanc that is grown and made with immaculate attention to detail. Half of it was matured in 400L barrels, with the rest sitting in stainless steel, for nine months. This lees contact gives a gorgeous richness to the wine which is balanced by bright, zesty acidity, green apple and pears, and compelling minerality.

South Africa is defined by careful balance. Hot sun and cool coastal breezes, the changing of the seasons, the passing of time. You can sense all this at work here. Heady tangerine and citrus blossom meet rich vanilla pod and almond flakes. It’s as fragrant as spring, ripe as summer, ephemeral as autumn and crisp as winter. The best thing, though, is its versatility. It’s absolutely perfect to take to dinner, particularly when you don’t know what’s on the menu. The fresh acid will pair beautifully with bright dishes, but there’s enough richness to sit well with heavier fare. Plus, a wine from a South African chardonnay legend like Paul Cluver definitely makes a good talking point.

Donovan Rall is some sort of South African wine sorcerer. Everything he touches turns to delicious. Vinified mostly in concrete egg, with the rest going into amphorae, clearly a bit of thought has gone into the making of it. The nose is bright with lemon and fragrant herbs. The palate is light, tight and concentrated, the low alcohol level leaving more room for flavour. Tangy fruit gets catapulted by a spunky acidity before finishing with a delightful savoury edge.

Cult Producer

In general, South African wines have the allure exotic - at least in Australia where they are not widely available. To add a bit of obscure to the mix, this is a white wine made from the (usually blended) red grape of cinsault. The resulting wine, that was raised in clay amphora is a light on it's feet and described as 'salty and very fresh'. This wonder of the wine world is sure to be intriguing in the glass and magical paired with the right food.

This wine has something of a cult following, and we’re not just talking about the ‘fo. It’s the top top top draw chardonnay from the amazing South African producer Botanica. It’s a masterpiece of winemaking, with perfectly-judged brushstrokes of interest applied to lovely fruit. It was matured in 400L barrels for nine months. This gives a gorgeous richness of texture to the bright palate of green apple, pear and minerality, backed by just a hint of brioche. It really is some of the most beautiful wines we sell from anywhere in the world!
