Why do we love this case?

This roundup of ridiculously good South African reds offers six reasons to never look back at another Aussie vino again. We don’t see too many South African wines here in Oz, so we’ve taken advantage of that gap in the market to source some of the most sought-after cult producers from the bottom end of Africa. Intrigued? Read on to find out more about each.

Every case comes with ONE bottle of each of the following:

Red
Grenache Blend
Swartland

David & Nadia Elpidios 2019
Allspice
Black Cherry
Minerally
Medium-bodied
Bright
Concentrated

This wine is from a tiny production, family-owned independent producer in Swartland, South Africa. David & Nadia spent ten years preparing their old dry-farmed bush vines to be ready to produce a wine of this calibre, letting the vineyard do the talking by acting with minimal intervention in the winery. There’s grenache, syrah, carignan, cinsault and pinotage in the blend, all laid to rest in oak for a year. The wine is so complex, so layered and so compelling.

Grenache rises to a new level! All hail David & Nadia, two new age winemakers who are driven by organic and ecological farming practises. Their sustainably farmed vineyard in South Africa is planted in deep, clay soils, allowing their old vines to grow flourished. Perfumed with flowers and rich notes of red berries, this Swartland treasure is smooth and gentle. Red fruit forward, its palate is balanced with earthy notes and a little touch of truffle and vanilla.

Gabrielskloof Syrah on Sandstone 2018
Allspice
Plum
Minerally
Medium-bodied
Bright
Concentrated

Sandstone defines the character of this wine, setting it apart from its shale sister. The vineyard is in a mountainous region, with vines planted in broken sandstone rock. It’s a merciless landscape, and very tough conditions for vines. The result is low yields of hyper-complex and concentrated grapes. These are pressed, 50% in whole bunches, before 10% new French oak maturation. There’s great depth to the wine, bolstered but not at all hidden by the oak. The savoury palate shows notes of black olive, blueberries, white pepper and violets. Those poor vines seem to have made an incredible wine just to spite us!

Gabrielskloof Cabernet Franc 2018
Blackberry
Cedar
Green Olive
Medium-bodied

South Africa has diverse landscapes that grow and incredible diversity of grapes - it's not all pinotage and chenin. This cabernet franc is yet another example of their wonderful diversity - a bold and firm wine that hits all of the red berry and herbal notes you'd expect in the grape, with a few exotic aromatics that remind you that it's from a far away place. So good!

This is one of the few South African pinot noir we’ve stocked and your chance to discover a rare gem! From the eclectic Thorn and Daughters, who craft all sorts of exotic varieties (semillon gris, chenin blanc) comes something with a local point of comparison. And compare you will - is it as elegant as Yarra? As powerful as Otago or as aromatic at The Hills? You’ll only know if you give it a try.

Here's what Tim Aiken said about this wine in his South Africa Report: "Featuring the highest-ever amount of Mourvèdre (29%), this is a Grenache-based red with Syrah providing the third component. Sourced from across the Western Cape, it's fresh and sappy, with lots of whole bunch spices, fresh acidity, some meaty undertones and a tangy plum and red berry core."
