I can almost guarantee you’ve never heard of this producer and likewise, almost guarantee that you will like this wine! Firstly, it’s the classic Aussie shiraz cabernet blend, grown in the terra rossa over limestone soils of Wratonbully, that are famous for producing wonderful red wines. Secondly, at five years old, after extended time in French and American oak, this wine is at the start of a great drinking window. It’s brimming with spiced berries, cedar and soft oak tannins. It’s medium-bodied and all the better for it - suiting all sorts of meat dishes, though I’d go for roast veggies or a Moussaka, if you are feeling fancy.

Zonte's Footstep is a winery that is so very versatile. Led by Canadian import Brad Rey, they make wines from vineyards across the state and always delivers the goods. Here’s a shiraz off a single block in Langhorne Creek that’s silky smooth with violets and plum on the nose, trailed by blackberry, spice and a bit of tannin on the palate. It’s plump and juicy, easy to drink, and laced with enough acidity to complement an array of dishes. And if you are left with any doubt, have a glance at its trophy cabinet. Stunning!

Domaine Gayda started as a staging post for weary travellers and their horses all the way back in 1749. In 2004, the property was converted into a winery, accommodation and restaurant. They source grapes from throughout the Languedoc region to make wines in both traditional and modern styles. This Flying Solo wine is a 60/40 blend of grenache and syrah from Minervois, one of the top areas in the region. It’s medium-bodied with soft tannins, a smooth palate and an energetic burst of bright red fruits. Simply enjoyable, gluggable and relax-on-the-deck-able wine.

Clare and cabernet go together like peas and carrots; thanks to typically warm S.A. days yet surprisingly cool evenings due to some serious elevation (480m for this specific vineyard, to be precise). The result is powerful and dark fruit notes alongside graceful elegance with natural retention of acidity to provide all the length you could hope for. Clare Wine Co. has secured a vineyard in the highly sought after sub region of Polish Hill with vines now over 20 years old. With a good few years under its belt, this drop is ready for the cap to be popped and enjoyed with your nearest and dearest.
