Cult Producer

Portugal's touriga and tempranillo (aka tinta roriz) combine to make a fruit-forward, plush and food-friendly wine. If you like McLaren reds, First Drop's take on this Portuguese blend is going to be a lovely departure from shiraz, showing off plums, cherries and herbaceousness. It has a few years on it, so it's got a smooth and mellow palate - ready to open and enjoy.

Great Southern shiraz is usually silky smooth, a bit rich, just over medium-bodied and incredible value. This one is no different and comes from Rosenthal, one of our favourite producers down in the bottom left corner of the continent. It’s brambly, a dash spicy, full of cherry and plum, and finished off with a nice even lick of French oak. Perfect everyday drinking with no occasion necessary.

Looking for the perfect mid-week quaffing cabernet? The kind of bottle that you don’t mind splashing into the Bolognese sauce, sipping while you cook and then cracking another one for the meal? If so, then we think we’ve found your wine. It’s Coonawarra cab from Rymill - no doubt the wine that you’d pick up a couple of dozen at their cellar door, but you’ve got it available here now, for a good time, not a long time, at this ripper mixed pack. Medium-bodied, full of cassis and supported by a bit of oak.

Langhorne Creek doesn’t get as much attention as its big brother to the north, McLaren Vale, but they can certainly churn out some great reds. The region sits between two bodies of water, providing a maritime climate that leads to slower ripening and great structure on the wines. This grenache, produced under the Take it To the Grave label, is a great example of that. There’s spice, earthiness, blackberry and plum all held together with a taut acidity, making for a wine that is full in flavour but not heavy in the slightest. And you can take that to the bank.

Shiraz and tempranillo go quite well together. Pikes has but together a fine example in Los Companeros (the companions - get it?) with the richness and softness of the shiraz complimented by the earthiness and rustic tannins of the tempranillo. There's dark berries, chocolate and spice on the palate and the wine is a bit peppery on the nose. So grab a dish that is Aussie or Spanish, it won't matter with this versatile wine.
