Why do we love this case?

These reds go from juicy-fresh to seriously savoury. Shiraz, grenache, cab blend, pinot and even a twerky tempranillo, from a mix of cool and warm climates. Check, check and check. This is the pack for lovers of out-and-out flavour, but plushness, freshness and balance too. You even get TWO of each of the following bottles in this impressive mix of wines that are anything but simple (but all red, to be crystal).

Gapsted have emerged as a powerhouse of northern Vic, an authority on Iberian grape varieties and how to make them incredibly approachable while maintaining all the character of the High Country. It makes us question whether Australia's answer to Rioja is actually in a small, tucked away corner. Or if we even need to answer Rioja. But if the question is: where can I get one of the most convivial, party-worthy reds around that's just so easy to enjoy on any occasion... well, all bets are off.

Put 'Hilltops' and 'shiraz' on a label and we can't help but get all enthused and wonder about Tim Kirk and all things spicy-fruity. And for pure, silky, accessible delight, this style is hard to match. Probably a little richer than expected with depths of blackberry and black pepper and some guts and gusto. Countered by the more expected blueberries and violet, this wine is all too easy to like.

Halliday Wine Companion

An extra year on current release pries open a dense core of fruit, and makes this wine exponentially more enjoyable. With the hard work done for you (keeping your mitts off – you're welcome) you're free to enjoy its dark plum and cherry delights. It has that classic hint of freshly polished leather boots, a sturdy backbone and still has a way to go in life. But that would require more hard work, and we don't have it in us. Over to you, mofo.

5 stars Sam Kim

“They’re very good winemakers, these guys. They produce a very consistent product at a very consistent price. They’re grenache specialists, and add their silky Vale shiraz to the mix and you have yourself a winner.” So says John to the gaggle of geeks at the Tasting Bench. This is spicy, peppery, and juice-running-down-your-chin plums. A full spectrum of blue, black and red fruits, with a lovely doughiness to it, barbera-like almost but much, much richer.

Elegant

Rob Dolan, or ‘Sticks’ to his fans, has made a cracker here. It’s 100% incontrovertibly a wine made to be drunk. Save your Grand Cru Burgundy for another day, when you’ve spent the day at a gallery, and the night at the opera. This is for fun nights with pals. Be warned, though. You will definitely notice your friends swinging by more often once they’ve quaffed a glass or two of this with you. You’ll become known as the one with the good wine. Bright cherries and strawberries, with prim hedgerows of herbaceousness, and just a sparkle of tannin for shape. Pair it with something Autumnal, while it’s still warm enough to enjoy the wine slightly chilled.

Heathcote Winery is one of the stalwarts of the region, and their HQ shiraz is the entry into their world. Made for immediate enjoyment – like, NOW mofo – I'd still give it a good decant. Let it sit an hour or so if you can. This is soft raspberries and cashew nuts, dusty tannins matched to jubey fruits. Classic Heathcote chocolate and just a little spice. Match to herbed chicken or a pesto pasta and feel it dance along your tongue.
