Balgownie is pretty much the flag bearer for Bendigo wines. Everything they do is distinctly high-quality, but also has a uniqueness of flavour that tells the region’s story. This shiraz cabernet blend leans towards the medium bodied and approachable. There’s softly supple cherries, blackcurrants, and gently warming spices to back them up. This wine’s seen 12 months of French oak, giving it a silky smooth coat and just a hint of chocolatey luxury. The dusky gold label is actually spot on; this tastes like it looks. Limited release, and rarified brilliance.

Let’s see if you can guess what we’d pair with this one. It’s sangiovese, a classic Italian grape. It’s full of bright red fruits, tangy acid and hot-blooded vibrance. It’s medium bodied, so no need to look to any super-heavy food. There’s undertones of oregano and basil, giving that classic savoury character. A good crackle of drying tannins cry out for some fats to bind onto - probably something melted, white and a bit stretchy. The round, wholesome feel of the wine probably need a round, wholesome pairing too. It’s a wine to share, for food that’s usually sliced up and passed round too.

Tertini is a winery perched up in the heady heights of the Hilltops region of NSW. The naturally cooler climate up there gives the wine peppery and herbaceous overtones and real aromatic lift. There’s plenty of blueberries, blackberries and violets in terms of flavour, while French oak maturation gives an added dollop of texture and grippy longevity. It’s all the more versatile for a more medium body and a fantastic wine to have on hand, ready to go at a moment’s notice!

Hollick are a winery that seem to have been around and making awesome wines for just about forever. Their Wrattonbully shiraz is a fine example of the quality they manage to achieve, year after year. This is full of dark berries, with chocolate, cloves and a gravelly, earthy depth it. It’s plush and silky, but with just enough tannin to keep it in shape. There’s a big boom of flavour on the mid-palate, that fades out very slowly and shows impressive length. It’s not a subtle wine, this. It’s dense and powerfully driven.

These guys are a boutique winery in WA, making some stunningly age-worthy cab sav. I reckon if you can hold on to this for about another six years, you’ll be absolutely singing with joy when you crack it open. But not everyone’s as patient, or as idealistic, and the medium-body and subtly earthy undertones to this cab mean it’s plenty enjoyable now. The tannins are finer than most, giving tidy structure instead of tongue-puckering aggression. It’s every inch the well made cabernet and an absolute pleasure to drink.

In all my time in wine, and of all the wines I’ve been lucky enough to try, I’ve found few as universally loved as Argentinian malbec. It must be the balance between bountiful fruit flavour and smoky undertones, oak and structure that win people over. There’s something there for everyone. Viñalba are one of Mendoza’s very best makers, and we think everything they make is excellent. It’s jam-packed with blueberries, blackcurrants and plums, with a good dollop of vanilla-driven French oak over the top. It’s been made to preserve the purity of flavour and keep all of that delightful malbeccy punch. Better choose a nice, thick, steak then, cause it’s going to take a beating.
