We say shiraz, you say syrah. Regardless of pronunciation, one thing is undisputed, we Aussies rock on an international stage when it comes to producing world-class shiraz. So as a homage to ourselves (well, we all love to pat ourselves on the back occasionally), we’ve pulled together a selection of shiraz that will make you feel as pleased with yourself as we do when we’re drinking these.
Each six pack contains one bottle of:

If you like full-bodied SA shiraz then this is a must-buy! It’s beautifully rich, dark red in the glass and has all of the hallmarks of premium McLaren Vale shiraz, including the hefty bottle and cork. It’s the kind of wine that makes you happy it’s winter - the wind can howl, the rain can pour, but it doesn’t matter because you have this luscious wine to warm you up and keep you company. It’s full of dark fruits (plum and blueberry), toasty oak and smooth tannins, ready to drink now and evolve over the next 10 years.

Not to be confused with Geoff Merrill’s ‘Pimpala Road’ range, these Pimpala Vineyard wines are careful barrel selections from Geoff’s reserve range. This has spent no less than 20 months in French and American oak barrels, plus over three years in the cellar to let all its powerful fruit and decadent oak flavour all meld together. It’s like liquid black chocolate cake, with the Vale’s dark chocolate and heady spice flavours oozing head-on into dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf and roasted coconut. We’re always happy to see Geoff’s wines in the warehouse, and even happier to see them in our glass.

This particular vino has a tale worth listening to, beginning in the vinous shiraz wonderland of the Barossa. Here, the magic begins in a single vineyard, where the fruit is sourced from 50+ year-old vines, and is meticulously hand-picked and turned into a spell-binding wine. A dark and intense shiraz, and a brooding mix of blackberries, tar, oak spice and hints of coffee. Aged in new French oak for 16 months, the palate is graceful, firm and built to go the distance.

If you’re like us and you’ve seen it all in the wine game, you would know the warm embrace that is First Drop wines. In the heart of the Barossa Valley up Nooriotpa way, and known to many for his iconic Mother’s Milk shiraz, John Retsas runs a ship that is all about the fun and the playful. ‘Delicious’ is a word that flows off the tongue when drinking any of his wines, and this shiraz is certainly no exception. While still truly Barossa- abundant with spiced plums, there’s some redcurrants and cherries for a light edge. Like Retsas himself, this wine is high in spirits and light of heart.

It is no surprise Halliday’s pipped these folks in the top 100 of Australia’s wineries. An elegant shiraz like this gives you a sheer appreciation for why it is the most popular grape variety down under. The quality of the fruit character is all down to the respect given to these special vines. Parcels of dry grown vines are to thank for the dense, rich palate; even if the wine presents with a bright, youthful and fresh edge. This producer has no weak spots in their whole range - this is friendly, approachable, and oh so special. Shiraz, you are such a good drink.

Cape Agulhas. Ever heard of it? Pop it into google maps and take a look at exactly where this drop hails from. You can’t get much more south in Africa than that. It’s where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet and you could certainly classify it as a maritime climate, cool enough to produce the elegant, lifted, lighter and peppery styles of shiraz. The First Sighting shiraz is a great place to start your South African wine journey.
