Why do we love this case?

We say shiraz, you say syrah. Regardless of pronunciation, one thing is undisputed, we Aussies rock on an international stage when it comes to producing world-class shiraz. So as a homage to ourselves (well, we all love to pat ourselves on the back occasionally), we’ve pulled together a selection of shiraz that will make you feel as pleased with yourself as we do when we’re drinking these.

Each six pack contains one bottle of:

Most folks aren’t aware that Coonawarra’s first great red was actually shiraz. The region’s cab sav gets the spotlight these days, but there is some awesome shiraz still being made there. This is a perfect example of one. It’s deep and rich with a fragrant nose. There’s blueberries, cherries, blackberries, chocolate and even bay leaf all intertwined and held together with cedary notes from a bit of time in toasted oak.

It’s full of dark fruits (plum and blueberry), toasty oak and smooth tannins, ready to drink now or evolve over the next 10 years.

"Hand-picked, destemmed and crushed, open-fermented, matured in French barriques for 18 months. This is a powerhouse, dripping black fruits, licorice and spice on a seemingly endless palate, burying the tannins and oak in its folds - their time will come. 95 Points" – James Halliday, Wine Companion

5 Red Star Halliday Rated Winery

If you were hanging out in South Australia in the 1880’s, you’d know Pikes for their beers. Fast forward 100 years and and several generations and the Pike family has firmly established themselves as one of the premier wine producers in the Clare Valley. Their Cottage shiraz speaks loudly of the Clare style - a bit less dense then wines from the neighbouring Barossa, but still deep and concentrated with all the hallmarks of an Aussie’s favourite red.

Thorn-Clarke have risen to great heights, becoming one of the largest family-owned estates in the region. Varietal expression is right at the front here, with all the great hallmarks of shiraz, from deep plummy fruit, gentle lifted acidity, and a whack of black pepper on the finish. Time in American oak gives this wine that vanilla kick that we love to see in our South Aussie reds. It’s all about the generosity, and true Barossa character.

Irvine are amongst many going a little more modern. For a Barossa winery, it’s rare to steer off the oak highway. Instead they’ve taken the back roads, celebrating scrumptious fruit and the hard work that goes into the vineyard. Plummy and creamy, opulent and powerful and supported brilliantly by fine, chalky tannins. This is delicious with a decant now, or will go for a good decade or so, at least.
