If you’re into deep, peppery and savoury shiraz, then you better read on. This one from Kensington Wines in the King Valley was hand-picked, treated with the utmost attention and care in the winery, and then sent to new French oak for 15 months. Dark in colour with aromas of sage, mint, black cherry and earth, there’s heaps of pepper, exotic spices and herbs running through the palate. This isn’t light and bright happy juice, but more the dark, brooder that warms the soul.

Yelland & Papps have crafted a fantastic single vineyard Barossa shiraz made from old vines on the western ridge of the valley. There’s opulence, fruit weight, fine tannins and a long finish on this one. Wild yeast has been utilised before nearly two years in a mix of new and seasoned French and American oak. Plum, mulberry and clove jump out of the glass upon first whiff. The palate expands even further with vanilla, licorice, dark chocolate and graphite. Smoothness, complexity and depth all wrapped up in a velvety package. This is really, really good stuff.

Geoff Merrill has done it again, proving his relentless consistency over the decades, and his avid followers will be blushing at the thought of the Botham Merrill Willis from 2015. Twenty nine (count em’) months relaxing in American and French hogsheads would often overpower the juice, but not in this instance as the intense, chocolatey, dark and brooding fruit holds up in impressive balance. This kind of style is what put Aussie reds on the world map. It’s full. It’s rich. It’s powerful. It’s what the doctor ordered. And if big, bold, rich dark shiraz is your jam, this wine is for you.

Another day, another delightful top notch Margaret River shiraz...this one coming from Heydon Estate. It’s just so silky smooth and easy. Everything you look for out of complex shiraz but just a dash less heavy than those SA versions. Plum and blackberry, licorice and fig, white pepper and leather. There’s power and tannin to tame that big steak, but elegance to keep you from feeling too heavy in the head. When it comes to quality Margs shiraz, it’s all about the balance. And this one’s firmly on the tightrope.

We love Journey Wines! Most of the wines come from the Yarra Valley, but this shiraz was sourced by winemaker Damian North from the Chalmers Vineyard, one of the most renowned in Heathcote. There’s about 25% whole bunch fermentation with wild yeast, followed by 16 months in mostly older oak. The wine was then bottled without fining, making it good to go for vegans. After four years, this shiraz has just started hitting its prime, showing a bright garnet colour, a nose of red plum and mulberry, and a palate of plums, licorice, blackberry and white pepper. The finish is long and silky, rounding out a stellar drinking experience.

Prototypical Barossa shiraz coming your way from Pirathon. They’ve been blending fruit from a variety of Valley vineyards for years to make this wine. The dense fruit profile has been balanced by 18 months in a variety of American, French and Hungarian oak barrels. Dark fruits such as plums and blackberries step forward and there’s plenty of secondary notes such as cedar, pastille and chocolate. If Barossa shiraz is your jam (but not too jammy of course), then turn to this wine from Pirathon.
