There’s a reason shiraz has long been Australia’s favourite grape, and has similarly taken the rest of the world by storm. Ol’ dependable is always packed to the gills with flavour, but offers so much variation from region to region that you never get bored.

We love what Thistledown do over in SA, working with some of the best vineyards in Barossa, McLaren and the Hills. This an elegant take on Barossa, medium-bodied shiraz made in a savoury style. Savoury say? Yep, expect classic shiraz fruit and spice, such as plums and licorice, balanced out by a wild herbal streak and super-dry finish.

Year after year, we bring this wine back. It's incredible bang for your buck and everyone seems to love it. Rosenthal sources the grapes from Frankland River, so it’s going to carry a bit of spice along its silky smooth palate. The profile leans towards mocha, plum and dark cherries. If Victorian shiraz is too light for you and SA shiraz is too heavy, then this is your line to toe.

- Margaret River
This Margaret River Shiraz has been aged for 14 months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak (50% new) and is a great example of how the right oak can super-charge a wine. It's medium bodied, as you'd expect from the Mediterranean climate, with a softness that makes it approachable now, yet the generous oak will allow development for the future.

Wrattonbully is a special place, famous for it's unique terra rosa over limestone soils. Terre a Terre (a side project of the Tapanappa empire) are a producer of very high calibre, and their expertise shows in all of their wines. This blend could easily fool you as an import in a blind tasting with it's depth, savoury notes and layers of tannin.

De Iuliis are a legendary Hunter producer, delivering wine in style, particularly the region's famed shiraz. This wine has soft red fruits, spice and acidity to balance all that fruit power. The 2017 vintage was a cracker in the Hunter, producing some outstanding shiraz and these guys have nailed it with this single vineyard release. It is medium-bodied with a lot to discover.

Ben Riggs is McLaren Vale royalty. This is the wine of a maker in his prime. Superfine and mega satisfying. Made in small batches, this has the classic fruitcake richness you’d expect, with surprising elegance, tasteful French oak and a savoury spice finish. It’s long and supple, rich enough for some lip-smacking satisfaction, but not overweight or tiresome. A bright streak of acidity keeps things fresh and exciting. No wonder so many mofos come back for more.
