Why do we love this case?

Like shiraz? Us too. This pack is about one of the world’s most versatile grapes strutting its stuff. In style terms, there’s a bit of everything - from the Vale to the Andes to the southern tip of Africa. The only thing that’s constant is quality. These are the best of the best. As you try them, one thing becomes obvious: All across the world, shiraz is in great shape.

Every pack contains one of each of the following:

Angela Lloyd, Platter's Wine Guide 2019
Sustainable farming

This wine is grown exclusively in shale, given a riper, more generous style than its sandstone sister. The soil retains water better, hence an extra touch of plushness. It’s not all plain sailing for these vines, though. This vineyard faces the full brunt of the south-easterly wind providing just enough stress for the vines to show their true colours. The wine itself shows dark red and black fruit, black olive tapenade and a hint of rooibos character, all held together with some juicy tannins. It’s seen a wild ferment, imbuing it with a uniqueness of place and character. Drink this now through to 2024, with a respectful stint in the decanter first.

From cult producer Laurent Habrard, comes an organically certified Crozes-Hermitage that is looking the goods and has a wonderful future ahead. This wine offers a classic expression of the iconic syrah region - equal parts deep and delicious. There are fresh black fruit aromas, along with violets and minerals, and the palate is fresh, but firm with tannins that will help the wine age and work well with food. Fans of the more serious versions of syrah from Eden Valley or Hawke’s Bay - don’t miss this one.

El Enemigo is easily one of the most exciting producers from Mendoza. They are best known for cabernet franc, but they do some amazing things with malbec (of course), chardonnay and syrah amongst others. This syrah has a touch of viognier, much like how they do it in the Northern Rhône. The wine has structure and power with aromas of black fruits, tobacco and spice. On the palate it's quite concentrated but not overbearing at all.

5 red star Halliday rated winery

Mitolo's Cantiniere is back! When I was part of the Dealer Team, chatting directly with mofos on the phone, this was without doubt one of the top 3 wines people asked for more of. It’s as intense, as complex, as high quality, as powerful as it is deeply, unendingly and immeasurably satisfying. A fanfare of Black Doris plum, blackberry, roasted nuts and spices, and super dark chocolate bursts onto the palate with the first sip. A cascade of supple tannin enhances the larger-than-life mouthfeel, with a bright flash of lively acidity to accompany. It’s sumptuous, opulent, decadent and however many other plush adjectives you care to throw at it. Plus it’ll cellar for a decade, easy. If you’ve not experienced it yet, you’re in for a wild ride!

Let me give you the lowdown on why we love this syrah from Hopesgrove. A few years ago the Wine Dealer team were absolutely obsessed with it. We waited with bated breath each time it came back around and mad scrambled to the phones to tell our clients that our favourite syrah is back! So after a few years, and many wines later, this stunning syrah has returned to us and we are stoked! It’s a classic expression of Hawke’s Bay, medium-bodied but with intense power. It’s elegant with silky tannins and savoury notes of white pepper & herbs.

Single Vineyard

Kellybrook has made a prototypical Pyrenees shiraz through and through - it’s bright, brambly, rich and smooth. The fruit spectrum shows strawberry, blueberry and cherry with secondary characteristics of licorice, spices and violets all with a creamy underlayer and chewy tannins for structure. In terms of provenance, the fruit comes from the Malakoff Vineyard (probably the only vineyard you may have heard of in the Pyrenees). All in all, a fragrant, lifted and gorgeous shiraz with plenty of oomph behind it. Yum!
