This magnificent blend from McGuigan combines cabernet from Eden Valley and shiraz from Clare Valley in an age-worthy flagship wine that is just hitting it's straps. It is one of the best examples out there of this classic Australian blend, with both varieties singing in perfect harmony. After eight years, it’s still big and explosive, rich and dense, and full of dark, dark fruit. There’s also chocolate, a nice line of oak and some interwoven tannin that is quite apparent. You can drink this now and enjoy the power, or you can lay this down for multiple decades and let it continue to develop.

Hobbs has made a big, bold, muscular Barossa shiraz with a touch of viognier to show off it’s prettier side. In terms of winemaking, everything but the kitchen sink has been thrown at this big boy. The fruit was handpicked at optimal ripeness, then the two components were co-fermented before being put to rest in new French oak for a whopping two years. It’s all black cherry, chocolate, spicy oak and florals (that’s the viognier) in a dense, inky wine that has two decades of life in it. If wine could arm wrestle, here’s your champion.

Schubert Estate brings the single block greatness with the brightness dialed up a notch thanks to a touch of viognier in its Lone Goose shiraz. It’s the northern Rhône recipe for greatness, realised much closer to home in Australia’s top shiraz region. Every aspect of the crafting is hands-on, from the harvest to the wild yeast fermentation, on through the basket pressing. Only then can this delicious drop get a rest, seeing 20 months in older French oak. The nose is a touch floral (thanks to the viognier), but that deep shiraz fruit powers through, accompanied by herbal and leather notes, along with chocolate and licorice. What happens when the darkness of Barossa shiraz sees the light? You’ll have to pull the cork to find out.

It’s been a good run for our Mofo’s that love big Barossa shiraz. The hits keep coming. Here’s another one that’ll scratch that itch. This comes from Cimicky, a winery with roots dating back into the 1840’s. The wine is rich and ripe, yet savoury and spicy. Two years in mostly seasoned oak has provided more in the way of structure rather than toastiness, allowing the concentration of fruit to really shine through. We’re not gonna tell you to wait to open this, but it’ll certainly age gracefully well into the 2030’s.

Sometimes words or phrases can be so very evocative. ‘War horse’ is certainly one of those. It evokes strength, power, determination and reliability, and it’s absolutely fitting for this wine. The Pirramimma War Horse shiraz is sourced from old vines with small yields and concentrated flavours. The palate is incredibly intense with mulberry, licorice, blueberry, anise and cedar. Preceding that is a bouquet of blackberry, plum, mint, vanilla and olive. The oak (both French and American) has been generously applied, providing a structure for ageing.

From the oldest vines on Ulithorne's estate vineyard comes this dark and deep Vale shiraz. Great drainage in the sand-over-clay soil sets the stage for excellent concentration of flavour, presenting as blackberry, cherry, plum and spice. Twenty months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak rounds out the package with fine-grained tannins and a subtle cedary influence on the back palate. This is classic Vale old vine shiraz, inky and smooth, deep and complex.
