Five Star Halliday Rated Producer

Who better to introduce this wine than Mr James Halliday, from his glowing 97 point review: "deep crimson-purple; a full-bodied shiraz, neither variety or region in doubt. The exceptionally youthful colour affirms all that follows on the bouquet and lusty palate, replete with ripe tannins, black cherries and berries, dark chocolate the calling card of McLaren Vale. The finish and aftertaste gained it an extra point."

Maverick Wines tends 75 acres of vineyards spread through the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Many are well over 100 years’ old with some dating back as far as the 1840s. Their winery is Certified Biodynamic and all of their vineyards are either Certified Biodynamic or biodynamic in practice. Dry farming plays a huge part in their grape growing as well, promoting incredible concentration of flavour. Everything is hand harvested and only their own fruit is used. It’s no surprise that they’ve attained a Five Star Red rating from James Halliday. The shiraz for this wine, sourced from the Ahrens Creek vineyard in Vine Vale, was planted in the early 1870s. Eight years ago, Ron Brown and the team at Maverick meticulously rewired and re-trellised every vine, returning the block to its full vigour. This shines through in the wine, one of plump richness, sweet fruit and a silky texture. Behind the fruit, you’ll find hints of roasted chestnut, black olive and baking spices. There’s plenty of fine grain tannin as well, proving great length and ageability.

Huon Hooke

This magnificent blend from McGuigan combines cabernet from Eden Valley and shiraz from Clare Valley in an age-worthy flagship wine that is just hitting it's straps. It is one of the best examples out there of this classic Australian blend, with both varieties singing in perfect harmony. After eight years, it’s still big and explosive, rich and dense, and full of dark, dark fruit. There’s also chocolate, a nice line of oak and some interwoven tannin that is quite apparent. You can drink this now and enjoy the power, or you can lay this down for multiple decades and let it continue to develop.

Five Star Sam Kim

Another Barossa old vine shiraz, this time from nearly 90-year-old vineyards! The fruit is from the Eden Valley subregion and the wine is powerful and opulent, but maintains a certain grace that keeps everything in balance... classic Eden! There’s no surprises here with the flavour profile, an expression of blackberry, plum, chocolate, spices and cedar. After three years in French oak and a couple of years in bottle, it’s drinking beautifully, but has another decade of prime left in it.

New to the 'Fo

Tempus Two sources their grapes from a single vineyard in the higher altitudes of the Hunter Valley, crafting a gorgeous shiraz in gorgeous packaging. Low yields, volcanic soil and a strong vintage all played their part here. The wine spent 18 months in a mix of French and American oak. And since this is the producer’s top of the range, only the best of the barrels made it into the final bottling. The nose is of raspberries, blueberries, mocha and vanilla, and the palate adds cherry, plum, cedar and smoked meats. This is an exceedingly complex Hunter shiraz with eight years already behind it and another 10-15 years of good drinking left.

Wine Advocate
Single Vineyard

Hobbs has made a big, bold, muscular Barossa shiraz with a touch of viognier to show off it’s prettier side. In terms of winemaking, everything but the kitchen sink has been thrown at this big boy. The fruit was handpicked at optimal ripeness, then the two components were co-fermented before being put to rest in new French oak for a whopping two years. It’s all black cherry, chocolate, spicy oak and florals (that’s the viognier) in a dense, inky wine that has two decades of life in it. If wine could arm wrestle, here’s your champion.
