Five Star Halliday Rated Winery

McLaren Vale shiraz, yes, but lithe and vibrant. A more medium-bodied feel leaves room for the lively fruit flavours to sing, unshackled from big, beefy, old-school styles. Classic brambly goodness skates on a fresh sheet of acidity, with just enough grippy tannin to keep it grounded. Miraculously food-friendly, there’s all the ingredients here for an infamous dinner party red. The kind you and your mates are liable to enjoy a wee bit too much of an evening. The previous two vintages of this garnered a more-than-respectable 95 points from Mr. Halliday himself. We got in quick with this year’s, but expect similar accolades to be awarded soon enough.

Reis Creek is back with another incredible deal! And it’s Barossa shiraz with four years of age no less. That four years is enough time to soften those tannins, letting the dark fruit profile sing. There’s also loads of spice, pepper and earthiness, as you’d expect from a great red from this famed region. One of the Barossa’s best has blessed our mofo’s with another killer deal on another killer shiraz. Thank you Reis Creek!

Like a good book, wine is not all about what’s on the cover. But we have to say, when you’re getting great vino in some super sleek packaging, it’s a big bonus. This shiraz from Starling is classic Barossa with a modern edge. Fruit-driven and rich, it hits every corner of your palate with pleasing intensity. The oak-imparted tannins make for a ripper time with some charred meat or veg, perfect for that easy weeknight in.

Concentrated

This old vine, open-fermented, basket-pressed, single block Clare shiraz from Crabtree has the right stuff. Aged in French oak for over a year, it’s got a spicy, dark-fruited core, slightly grainy, vanillin overtones but is quintessentially medium-bodied. Elegant and textural without any over-extraction. It’s the details in the harvest and the production that result in another winner from this former Winemaker of the Year nominee (Gourmet Traveller Mag). Crack this now or in ten years - choose your own adventure. Good times guaranteed.

South Aussie shiraz tempranillo blend with 6 years on it is truly not something you stumble across every day. The team at Mt Billy spared no cost in producing this stunner, with handpicked fruit, partial whole berry ferments, and a variety of barrels for nuance given in the ageing process. There’s still lively plums and red cherries in the glass, while starting to delve into some serious chocolate, fig and leather notes. This is the kind of wine you don’t hesitate to enjoy.
