Five Stars Sam Kim

It’s safe to say this wine is a ‘shoe-in’. Multiple vintages of this famed vino from Haselgrove have rushed into our warehouse and zoomed straight back out to mofos faster than you can say ‘shiraz blended with cab sav and a splash of cab franc’. At its core, we have all the plush dark berries, plums and chocolatey goodness that you’d expect from McLaren Vale. But the blend of cabernets is what lifts this drop way above entry level, firm tannins and a liveliness on the back palate provide wonderful length and serious structure; perfect to pair with your good old fashioned Sunday roast lamb with all the trimmings.

James Halliday
Single Vineyard

As solid a Vale shiraz as they come. Built like a brick sh*thouse perhaps? Okay, let’s not go there. But this shiraz by Brick Kiln is from a single vineyard with the grapes getting a classic basket pressing before spending 20 months in American oak. It’s rich and ripe with blackberry, plum, chocolate, coconut and vanilla. The tannins have softened after four years, but there’s still a peppery touch to balance out the fruit. Full-bodied? Yep. Delicious? Yep. Shy? Certainly not!

You’re doing things right if you get some charred things on your dinner- whether that be meat or vegetables. Lean into the comforts, and enjoy without restraint.

Mofo Fave

This South Aussie shiraz has quite the following in the USA and has all the bold flavours and rich palate you would expect. It’s pronounced and powerful on the nose with toasted coconut oak notes from the time spent in American oak. The palate is full of dark chocolate, black cherries and plums in a rich and robust body. Tannins are present and beg for a delicious BBQ’d meat. If you like wine big and you like wine powerful, give this one a go.

Bendigo not a shy and retiring region, and neither is this wine. This shiraz is amped up on all the red and black fruits, and generously gifted with all the coconut-vanillin fancy oak flavour you could ask for. It’s a big and bold mouthful matched to sandy, textural tannins that help bring it home to a crescendo of bright acidity. There is never a dull moment with this wine. At five years old, it is still a brash youngster, but a very enjoyable one to have around. Or tuck it away so it’s not seen or heard for a few more years and it’ll mellow out beautifully.
