Barossa Valley, SA
5 Red Star Halliday Rated Winery | Women in Wine
You could be forgiven for thinking every Barossa shiraz is essentially the same. It’s true that there is a common thread running through them, one of dense fruit concentration, deep inky colour and a bit of earthiness. But the different corners of the valley, the variety of winemaking techniques and of course the quality of the fruit all make a difference. This one comes from a team that has been involved in wine for decades and is able to source high-end fruit from talented growers. They’ve given this bold wine plenty of time in oak, allowing for the integration of some counterbalancing vanillin and tannin to the intense raspberry and jube fruits and subtle spiciness. It’s big, it’s rich and it’s complex...great Barossa shiraz in a nutshell.

94pts Sam Kim| 5 Stars Sam Kim | 5 Red Star Halliday Winery
The grapes for this unmistakably Heathcote shiraz come from a prime selection of vineyards from across the region. It’s like they’ve taken elements from the body, and distilled them to capture the soul of the place. For me, these wines are all about cherries and brick dust. That’s here in spades. Plump, vibrant red fruits and dusty, savoury undertones make for something at once elegant and unpretentious.

Clare Valley, SA
5 Star Halliday Rated Winery
Clare Valley shiraz is in a class of its own. It benefits from the ballsy, rich-fruited, adrenaline-pumping charms of South Australia, but retains a bright flash of refreshing acidity thanks to the higher altitude. The resultant wine is fruit-forward and plush, but lighter and brighter and full of herbaceous crunch. There’s something for everyone, then, and a full spectrum of flavour. From tangy blueberries and softly scented raspberries, to summery black cherry and juicy plums. It’s tied together by a gentle peppering of tannin and a gentle kiss of oak.

McLaren Vale, SA
5 Red Star Halliday Winery
This producer has to be one of the most consistently excellent wineries in McLaren Vale. Many of their wines get scores in the high-90s year after year and we reckon this wine may have the same fate, so were happy to get in before the reviews. The flavour’s there and the points will come. This one is McLaren Vale to a tee with all the dark, ripe berries, chocolate and spice you could want. It’s full-bodied and absolutely delightful. Trust us, mofo, this stuff is awesome.

96pts Limestone Coast Wine Show | Gold Medal Limestone Coast Wine Show | Bronze Australian & NZ Boutique Wine Show
This shiraz is an absolute POWERHOUSE! A powerhouse of bold shiraz flavour and a wine that our mofos just can’t get enough of, from a producer who has become a solid favourite in the last year or so. The wine is deep and rich on the nose, with plum and a touch of eucalypt. We suggest decanting to get most of these complex aromas. On the palate, it’s full-bodied with drive and all the berries and plums you could want. The wine has seen a bit of new oak, both French and American and shows vanilla and spice. Now five-years-old, the fruit and oak are well integrated and the tannins are fine and abundant.

The Great Southern, WA
Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery
We all know the drill with Great Southern shiraz by now. It’s got all the dense dark fruits of your favourite SA drop paired with the medium body and herbal notes of more cool climate examples of the variety. This one comes from one of Great Southern’s top producers and has a bright fruit profile of blackberry and plum with an intriguing spiciness finished off by fine tannins. Everyone at the table will be angling for that last glass from the bottle.
YOU’D PAY $22 full price.
What is a Black Market deal?
Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
