Why do we love this case?

This mix of mostly shiraz (one shiraz blend) has enough of the usual suspects, and a couple of the less common but most welcome. It includes two Barossa examples, two McLaren Vale versions, one from Limestone Coast and one from as far as Frankland River. Two of each of them, too. You won’t be lacking in any full shiraz flavours, plus you get a bit of spice and silk thrown in from WA and southern SA. You’re welcome.

Here’s some more on each of the included vinos:

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2015

Barossa Valley, SA

5 star Halliday rated winery

A masterful maker who usually deals in cooler climate wares has cast their spell on this Barossa boldness, and I have a feeling this premium shiraz from a fantastic vintage will be gone before you can say “22 days on skins”, ten times quickly. This wine has a bit of a mystical theme, and the magic is in the bottle. The big, burly, expensive Rhône-shaped bottle, that is. Spiced black plum, berries, currants and a boldly structured, graphitey backbone lead the charge, joined by more vanilla-spice from twelve months of fine French oak ageing. Balance and an extremely long finish back it up. It’s a uniquely wonderful expression of Australia’s most famous region, with the structure and power to age gracefully for many years.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz Cabernets 2017

McLaren Vale, SA

5 red star Halliday rated winery | Halliday Dark Horse Winery award

A firm favourite of the ’fo - in fact, that’s an understatement. ‘Staple’ is more accurate, considering that the number of bottles that’ve landed in hot little mofo hands almost stretches into six figures. And that’s only over three vintages. But the consistent goodness here is so reliable, and the quality so high for the price that its popularity isn’t so mind-boggling as at first glance. From a maker who can do no wrong, this shiraz-cabernet has all the things we love in a classic McLaren Vale red. Dark fruits, chocolate, spice and herbal hints with wonderful length and drive, this is an absolute cracker of a blend. We already know you love it just as much as us.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2016

McLaren Vale, SA

This is a classic McLaren Vale shiraz with ‘Reserve’ written all over it - figuratively and literally. Only made in years when everything comes together just right... the grapes were born in the outstanding 2016 vintage, and aged in both French and American oak for 18 months post fermentation. It’s drinking beautifully now, but will develop nicely over the next five or more years. Plums, cherries, spices and round, rich dark fruits. Tannins drive a lovely, complex finish. This reserve is reserved only for the quickest mofos, with their name written all over it as well (only figuratively, this time). Make sure your name is one of them.

YOU’D PAY $35 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2017

Frankland River, WA

5 red star Halliday rated winery

This wine has skipped a couple of vintages, but we’re stoked to have the 2017, and lots of it, for you mofos who’ve loved this in the past - and for those who will learn that love for the first time. Rich and spicy cherry, plum and dark berries fill the glass, with licorice, black pepper and earth providing an alluring, inky depth. The palate is full and soft, driven by dark, pillowy fruit. But no need to sleep on this one. As Mofo Buyer karel says: “This is the follow-up everyone’s been waiting for... forget Empire Strikes Back, and f*ck Return of the Jedi.” Don’t mention anything about Jar Jar Binks, either. Obviously. Ugh. “This is bigger than than the Death Star, and more luscious than…” Karel trails off, distracted by the wine. He looks up for a moment.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2017

Barossa, SA

91pts Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion | 5 red star Halliday rated winery

Who’s your favourite Barossa producer? We reckon it’s probably this guy. The quality to price ratio is strong with this one. Starting off with some leafy blackcurrants and plum, chocolate and peppermint, this is not your run-of-the-mill Barossa red. It’s much darker, with molasses-driven, dried blueberry kind of fruit. And although it’s full-bodied, it’s less strident with its oak character. Lovely chunky tannins are certainly a feature though, expanding to a mouth-filling dryness. Silky fruit keeps you coming back for more. And more...

YOU’D PAY $29 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2015

Limestone Coast, SA

This is unexpected. Coffee bean, raspberry-chocolate, earthy and rich. Ripe and warming, piles of dark fruit on the palate, but not overworked with too much oak. Sweet-fruited, but its fullness is all about savoury tannins, a confident density borne of equally confident grape-growing and winemaking. Good stuff.

YOU’D PAY $20 full price.

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article, absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
