Rioja is a region that needs no introduction. Universally adored worldwide for making powerfully focussed, incredibly age-worthy and unbelievably enjoyable wines, Rioja rarely disappoints. These six represent a wide variety of styles, from the ever-famous tempranillo to the always-delicious grenache. Theyāre aged and ready to go, but thereās aeons of life in them yet, so no rush.Ā
Every case contains ONE of each of the following:

Finca de la Rica , who make this wonderful wine, are one of our all time favourite Rioja producers. They work with around forty small plots of old vines across Rioja Alavesa and make small volumes of top-quality wine. El RincoĢn de Los Enebros is their take on a grenache-dominant blend, with tempranillo playing a supporting role. Anyone familiar with the region knows that old vine garnacha from Rioja can reach lofty heights of excellence and this wine certainly has some of that magic. Part of the magic is the twelve months that it spends in new American oak, that is wrapped into the generous fruit, and balanced by the fresh notes (likely from the temp). Itās rich and powerful, and very silky - the fruit spectrum is blue and red (in abundance) and there are layers of toasty vanillin notes along with baking spice. Iām going to take a punt and say that lovers of full-bodied reds from malbec to shiraz to Amarone are going to be absolutely delighted by this one.

A wine needs to be next level in order for a critic of James Sucklingās calibre to call it phenomenal. That wine is this garnacha (grenache) from one of Riojaās best - Sierra Cantabria - part of the empire that has been owned and run by the Erugen family since 1870. Thatās a long time. This particular wine comes from 93-year-old vines and is a great example of old vine Rioja garnacha. There is power, depth and an infinite amount of detail in each glass. The wine will improve with a decant and also improve with a few more years in bottle. Thereās dense layers of dark fruits like plums and figs, sitting beautifully with earthy and herbaceous notes. Thereās enough tannin to let you know youāre drinking Rioja, but in balance with the fruit.

Weāre pleased to welcome back another vintage of El Buscador (the Searcher) by the team at Finca de la Rica in Spainās most famous region of La Rioja. Finca de la Rica are some of the nicest guys in the wine industry. You donāt go a minute with them without wine in your glass, food on your plate and a good chat. Muy buena gente. Like the 2016, this is top-notch Rioja. You can tell just by looking at it. It looks somehow livelier in the glass, more vital and intense. Tempranillo and garnacha make up the mix here (90/10%), singing of juicy cherries and plums. Oak treatment comprises of a 70-30 French-American split, giving darker toasty notes and a background coconuty hint. The wine is deep and complex, but also fun and never too imposing. For fans of the 2016, this new vintage is a touch more concentrated, as it contains declassified barrels of some of their top sites.

Tempranillo is Spainās superstar red grape and this temp is from one of Riojaās best - Sierra Cantabria - part of the empire that has been owned and run by the Erugen family since 1870. Theyāve had a while to work out how to make superb Rioja and we are grateful for their hard work and dedication. Racy red cherries, juicy-as-hell plums, exotic spices⦠theyāve pieced it all together perfectly. Thereās a touch of oak, as youād imagine, but most of the power in this medium-bodied wine is from fruit. Next time youāre out under the pergola with your mates, barbie sizzling away quietly to the side, sun shining happily in the sky, leave the shiraz alone! Pull out a bottle of this instead.

This is Riojaās new wave tempranillo thatās named after a crazy cat! Far from the dusty leather armchair wines most associated with the region, this is young, racy and much more fun. Itās for a young-at-heart crowd, bright, juicy and exuberant. Though, for all its fun, it tastes like a wine well above the price bracket. Raucously red fruited, with 10% American oak to give it some spice, it is compact and punchy in form. Great value for all of the spice, plums and tannins in this delicious wine.

This is an early-released wine in the ājovenā style from Bodegas Forcada in Rioja, who specialise in old vine tempranillo and grenache. Bristling with jubilant cherries and sizzling with exotic spices, itās perfect for seasoning your snags with every mouthful. 90% tempranillo, filled out with a few splashes of grenache for a bit of plumpness to the palate. Enjoy freely, pour liberally, and laugh heartily!
