Why do we love this case?

Drinking riesling is like having a deep and meaningful conversation with an erudite friend; it’s expressive, complex and makes you think. Plus you’re doing one of those things that enriches your future self. So we’ve gathered some golden grape goodness from some of the best riesling academies to get your mind and palate ticking.

Each case contains ONE bottle of each of the following:

Spioenkop Riesling 2017

Lime

Made in a dry Alsace style, this phenomenal wine is, according to Tim Atkin, consistently the best Riesling in South Africa. That's a big call- but we'd say a pretty accurate one. Surrounded almost entirely by mountains, the area of Elgin in the Western Cape experiences cooler temperatures than those neighbouring, and is increasingly being recognised for its outstanding wines. Expect aromatic layers of peach, ginger, grapefruit and kerosene. The palate is full bodied, dense and tightly wound with punchy driving acidity. 'Wow' was the word out of our mouths at the tasting bench, and we don't think we need to say any more.

Finding riesling of this calibre can be like finding a needle in a haystack. While there’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to Aussie rizza, there’s not many that will enchant you quite like this one. Nestled in the Victorian Grampians, Montara are crafting some of the most elegant wines on the market. This riesling is from their old vines, expressing intense character unlike any other for miles around. Lifted and full of citrus character, with a dash of viscosity that enhances the tight balance. This is bound to gratify you even more in years to come, but excels as a refreshing and floral style now. How often do you see scores like that mofo? We suggest you jump on before we drink it all ourselves...

It’s rare that you see Aussie rizza made so proudly in the style of its motherland. If you’ve ever had a German riesling, you’ll know this variety has aromatics that refuse to be contained to the glass. Andrew at Artis Wines is making art out of crisp, aromatic white varietals and this riesling is only one example. It’s peppy, zippy, yet so wonderfully weighted with a ripe apricot and honeysuckle profile. Partial barrel fermentation has allowed the complex fruit characters to be turned up a notch, accentuating all that prowess that riesling boasts. We’ll say it now, there’s a touch of residual sugar here- but don’t let that scare you, mofo. Paired with a refreshingly high acidity, this wine is the ultimate companion to food- don’t look any further for your ultimate BYO choice. The pleasures that await!

Mofo Fave

It’s 2022, and we’re at it again. Our mates at Riversdale in the Coal River Valley have just dropped off another excellent vintage of a wine they truly excel at - Tassie riesling. This is a super fresh example from the 2021 vintage and it’s everything we could have asked for. It’s dry of course, but there’s plenty of citrusy fruit to balance that, coupled with loads of herbaceousness and texture completing the package. Lemon and lime abound, making for one of the most refreshing rieslings we’ve put in our glass in a long long while.

We’re not always all about the numbers, but sometimes they speak for themselves. In this case: 100% hand picked, 100% Watervale, 94pts from James Halliday, and ageing potential beyond the next 10 years. Those, mofo, are pretty good numbers. We’ve never failed to be impressed by Kilikanoon's skills with a host of varieties in the Clare, but riesling is rarely outshined here. You’ll get the citrus driven palate, sure. But what we have here goes well beyond that linear crisp style; it delves into green apple, honey, white blossoms and granitic minerality. This is a little waxy and weighted, it coats the palate aiding in a long and boisterous finish. We’re ticking all the boxes on the scorecard for this one.

We love Eden producer Brothers At War and it seems that James Halliday does too - giving them 99 points on their 2018 single vineyard grenache! Though this riesling is yet to be rated, but we are sure James will love it as much as we do, for its vibrant fruit, mineral purity and brilliant length. There's classic bright citrus, floral notes and driving acid. Well made by a producer to keep your eye on.
