The Woodvale wines are made by Kevin Mitchell, one of Clare Valley’s best winemakers. Fresh out of the 2021 vintage, this wine comes from selected parcels from across the Clare Valley and according to Kevin is "an ode to Mort Mitchell’s Sharegarden that he managed when he was a much younger man!". As you can imagine - the wine is superb!

I was recently asked why I like to drink riesling so much. We do a lot of tasting at the ‘Fo, especially of big, rich reds. After a massive line-up of these heavy belters, the bright, racy acidity of riesling is such a refreshing cleanser. It’s the wine world’s version of a sports drink after the match. It resets and reinvigorates. And Mount Barker, along with the rest of Great Southern consistently provides some of the best on the continent. Rosenthal has crafted this one that's got texture, drive and a bold line of citrusy zing to get you back on your game.

Another year and another glorious vintage of one of our absolute favourites. We are still wondering if this “Golden Hillside” is an actual place, or a mythical place of the gods. The riesling from the Hillside is nothing short of heavenly, and the price suggests some sort of divine intervention. Plus, however high the vineyards of Clare Valley can get, surely those planted on celestial slopes are moreso. How else would you get such an otherworldly balance of drool-worthy lime and sunshine-soaked lemons, refreshing minerality and cloudlike complexity? The bottle definitely says Clare Valley though. Maybe heaven is a place on earth after all?

Jean Biecher & Fils Riesling 2020

French Import

Alsatian riesling is in a world of its own, and according to producer Jean Biecher & Fils “the elegance of its acidy structure, its vigorous and exquisite aromas along with its strong ties to the mineral world make this wine an unending adventure of depth and finesse”. We couldn’t have said it better. Where the German rieslings, just across the border, are delicate and ethereal, the Alsatians are richly fruited and fuller-bodied. This one’s peachy, with hints of wet slate and a lanolin-like air about it. The acidity is all sunny citrus, while the overall impression is stone dry. These wines will age for aeons, so drink whenever you feel the time is right over the next 20 years.

If you’re a lover of riesling, but have ever been put off by the thought of it taking the roof of your mouth off, this one is your jam. It’s a slightly riper style: less of the laser beam acid and more ripe fruit fun. It smells and tastes like a riz, with all that complexity and aromatic charm, while being deliciously easy drinking. There’s lime and sherbet, as standard, then hints of apricot, apple juice, and yellow apple. It’s amazing value and a perfect wine to have on hand for any occasion.

Claymore God is a DJ Riesling 2021
Citrus
Floral
Green Apple
Light-bodied

Elegant

We’d like to welcome another vintage of one of our Clare Valley favourites. When it comes to the legendary producer Claymore, I always think - come for the reds, and stay for the riesling. They have a few rieslings in their collection, all excellent examples of what Clare Valley does best. God is a DJ is their weeknight rizza and it gets more serious as you move up the range. It’s floral and sherberty on the nose with a few funky notes too. It follows with a dry and textural palate that is pithy and citric - vibrant and classic. It has a super-dry finish and my notes say “it’s pretty bloody delicious”.
