Sam Kim
4.5 Stars Sam Kim

While Eden Valley is one of the cooler spots in the Barossa Valley, it still gets enough warmth to put some power and texture into riesling. This one from Sorby Adams, sourced from 30 year old vines, offers up nectarine, green tea, green apple and lemon rind. The acid line is quite focussed, making for a bracing and refreshing finish. And while it’s bright and fresh now, it’ll age wonderfully for another decade or more whilst developing secondary herbal characteristics.

Mofo Fave

This is riesling from the fantastic 2017 vintage, produced by Riversdale Estate of the Coal River Valley. It’s so fresh, so confident and so easy. The citrus is bright with its accompanying acidity, the nose is all orange blossom and green apple, and there are hints of pithiness and quince on the palate. There’s even texture and a dash of spiciness to boot. It’s like a Ferrari easy chair, super sporty but so very comfortable.

2021 CWSA

Here’s one from Brand & Sons that’ll reset your expectations of where great riesling can be produced. You might not come across a lot of Coonawarra rizza, but it has nothing to do with how well it grows there. The wineries have dedicated so much of their vineyard space to cabernet and the ilk that there isn’t much room for other varieties. Truth be told, Coonawarra is actually a cool climate region and the famous terra rossa soils provide a welcome texture to riesling. You’ll find typical citrusy acidity and green fruits, coupled with some refreshing minerality, but it’s that touch of musk on the finish that gives the wine a sense of place. Perhaps we’re on to something.

Mofo Fave Producer

Jeanneret have made a superb young riesling, from a couple of lofty vineyards in Clare. Not a steely citrus taste bud assault, more approachable and friendly. Watch out for grapefruit pith, meyer lemon flesh and white peach, with fresh chopped herbs. It’s fine and clean, with just enough sweetness to do its job with style.
