I was recently asked why I like to drink riesling so much. We do a lot of tasting at the ‘Fo, especially of big, rich reds. After a massive line-up of these heavy belters, the bright, racy acidity of riesling is such a refreshing cleanser. It’s the wine world’s version of a sports drink after the match. It resets and reinvigorates. And Mount Barker, along with the rest of Great Southern consistently provides some of the best on the continent. This one from Rosenthal has got texture, drive and a bold line of citrusy zing to get you back on your game.

New to the 'Fo

Kevin Mitchell is one of the top winemakers in the Clare and he's just sent us this riesling from his own brand, Woodvale. It’s everything you would want from the variety that makes Clare famous. It’s crisp, textural, bright, laser sharp and the tiniest bit rich. The fruit is of that classic riesling profile with an array of citrus spanning from meyer lemon to key lime to grapefruit and even mandarin. We’re loving it and can’t wait for you to as well.

When we find a treasure that our mofos love, we keep going back for more. Here’s the third vintage of Atlas Wines' Section 32 riesling that we’ve featured and the first two were a roaring success. It comes from one of the rising stars of the region and hits all the notes you’ve come to expect. It’s bursting with citrus, minerality and texture. Riesling from Clare is renowned for it’s bracing acid line carried forth with vivid fruit. This one delivers all that and then some. Load up the cellar before it’s gone!

If you’re a lover of riesling, but have ever been put off by the thought of it taking the roof of your mouth off, this one is your jam. It’s a slightly riper style: less of the laser beam acid and more ripe fruit fun. It smells and tastes like a riz, with all that complexity and aromatic charm, while being deliciously easy drinking. There’s lime and sherbet, as standard, then hints of apricot, apple juice, and yellow apple. It’s amazing value and a perfect wine to have on hand for any occasion.

Paddy makes great wines on the North Island of NZ and we love sourcing them for our mofo’s. This is the first riesling we’ve gotten from him and it’s a ripper. It comes from a small one-hectare block planted back in 2007. The wine is dry, minerally and bursting with fruit on the citrus spectrum. You’ll find an aroma of white florals and a palate of lime, green apple and lemon barley. Another day, another killer wine from Paddy.

Simple winemaking is usually the best plan when it comes to Clare Valley riesling. You take high quality fruit, press it gently, ferment at a cool temperature and then let it rest. If you want to work in a bit of texture, as is the case with this one here from Thistledown, simply leave the wine on its lees for a couple of months. That’s it...that’s all there is to do. If you try to do anything more clever than that, it ends up being clunky. This riesling is mouthwateringly crisp with flavours of lime, elderflower, grapefruit and quince. Lay it down for a few more years and you’ll start to see that texture become more prominent. It doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that.
