Château La Borie, one of the few domains in Côtes-du-Rhône bearing the name Château, was built in the 17th century. Since then, it has passed through several families and is under the care of the Margnat family today. Situated ten kilometres from the left bank of the Rhône river, the winery produces four wines from its 75 hectares of vines. La Borie’s Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is a blend of syrah, grenache and mourvèdre sourced from vines over clay and stone. Macerated dark fruits drive the palate of the wine with minerality, spice and chocolate as complements. This is one that’s ready to go now but has nearly a decade of life if you choose to let it age.

Château La Borie, one of the few domaines in Côtes-du-Rhône bearing the Château name, was built in the 17th century. Since then, it has passed through several families before coming under the care of the Knapp family today. A delightful blend of grenache and syrah, this has all the prowess of the classic Rhône blend- rich stewed blackberries and black plums, notes of game and some subtle spice are in full swing. There’s a lot of wine from this area that appears a bit rough and unpolished, but this is certainly not one of them. Driven. Focused. A bottle of this on hand is one step closer to a happy evening.

Les Amandiers Bouteille grenache blend is made by cult producer Raymond Usseglio from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of our favourites from the region. This delicious grenache blend is packed with super fresh berries - raspberry, strawberry, loganberry - plus distinctive chinotto and blood orange. There are even stone fruits on the palate. It’s a lovely and fresh with medium-to-full weight, grippy and fruit-driven without being too serious or too flippant.

Straight from the Rhône Valley comes this spicy mix of grenache, syrah and mourvèdre. Each grape contributing its own magic to make a ripe and juicy red-berried, medium-bodied bottle of delicious vin rouge. Syrah gives attractive plum and cherry aromatics and a finely polished tannic structure, while the grenache leads with a juicy ripeness and generous texture, and mourvèdre chimes in with earthy and subtle meaty notes. Classic, dry, vin rouge.

From the top young winemaking team of Baptiste Olivier and Gérald Lafont comes another vintage of their delicious Côtes-du-Rhône. This team work for some of the most exciting estates in the Rhône Valley and in their spare time create a few wonderful wines for themselves. It’s a pure and clean expression of the region with bright and lively grenache dominating (75%), with syrah (15%) and mourvèdre filling out the palate. Interestingly, this leans further into the blueberry fruit spectrum rather than the usual red fruits, with plenty of spice and earth coming through.

2016 was a banger year across the Southern Rhône. There are great reds up and down the scale in terms of appellation and price. This here is a great example of that. So much fruit, so much palate weight, so much smoothness. Just have a look at the review below from Wine Advocate. They’re clearly big fans of this Côtes du Rhône and recognise the incredible value within.
