Why do we love this case?

This Rhône Rockstar pack’s got the moves like Jagger. It’s all hips and lips strutting on the stage, no matter which bottle you choose.  Although there’s one there that’s probably more like Keith Richards than Mick. Check out the tasting notes - you’ll see which one it is. Putting the rock connotations aside, this is a fantastic look into the Rhone Valley and their GSM-based blends, as well as a 100% Syrah from Crozes-Hermitage. You’ll be lip-syncing, ‘How come you taste so good’ and rocking out the air guitar as these wines strut their stuff.

This label is a new project between Baptiste Olivier and Gérald Lafont, two winemakers who have a wealth of experience with some of the Rhône's best vineyards. And the fact that this is their Crozes-Hermitage (100% Syrah from the northern Rhône) makes it even better. Such beautiful varietal fruit purity and regional expression shine through here to create the complete package. Dark briary fruits get a hit of further complexity with black pepper, five-spice and earthy minerality on the nose. The palate goes long with that mineral drive underpinning licorice all-sorts, olive tapenade and blackberries. Yep - this definitely takes a walk on the wild side. A wonderful example of Crozes-Hermitage.

Gérald Lafont consults to more than 40 different wineries in the Rhône, but his heart lies with the family vineyard in Rhone's Lirac. This is where his father Yvon showed a young Gérald the ropes. This blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsault and 5% Mourvèdre speaks of time and place. Not surprisingly, Grenache's red fruits and spice dominate here, while the smaller components certainly add darker fruit flavours, with additional palate weight and poise. There's an ethereal feel here as the flavours float across your palate, pinned down with that spine of minerality.

This is as juicy as that first bite into a new chewing gum, and doesn’t lose its flavour after a few bites either. Black cherry, cassis and sweet licorice are the flavours of the day, though closing with a savoury air of cured meats. Tannins are abundant, but surprisingly laid back, and happy to work around the drinker. It’s a silky smooth experience, and you’d have no idea this beast sits at 15.5%. It was only after a couple of glasses that, hiccuping merrily, I thought to check the back label.

This wine is from the glorious, contemporary Château Sixtine, and is the little sibling to their incredible Châteauneuf-du-Pape - in price, at least. The term ‘Villages’ always makes me think it’s something lesser, when in fact it’s superior, with stricter rules around its designation. More time and money thrown its way. Not that you’d really associate all that love with this kind of price point, all the way from France. But here we are, with a juicy, very French but modern and vivacious, blue-black-red-fruited expression of all that’s good in the Rhône. Guigal used to be my go-to. No more.

Raymond Usseglio is a biodynamic Châteauneuf-du-Pape maker with a cult following and a bit of an outlaw, and this is signature outlaw wine. He’s gone so wild and crazy with it that he can’t state the vintage on the label, so it has to be labelled Vin de France even though it’s probably all from the Rhône Valley. Put it this way: the Usseglio fam don’t bother making for the masses, and they have a 100-point rated red. So no big deal. Semantics aside, this is packed with super fresh berries - raspberry, strawberry, loganberry - plus distinctive chinotto and blood orange. There are even stone fruits on the palate. It’s lovely a fresh with medium-to-full weight, grippy and fruit-driven without being too serious or too flippant. A glorious interpretation of grenache-based red with no affectation, but will yield lots of affection.

This is a ‘greatest hits’ of Rhône grapes. Syrah leads the charge, with grenache, carignan and cinsault giving punchy support. A breathy air of Provence herbs fills the glass with each swirl. Then it’s black plum, blackberries and earthy notes, peppered with spice that give the palate life. ‘Esus’ may sound like the next Kanye album, but it’s a beautifully crafted collection of flavours that’ll please Pop and Classical lovers alike.
