Why do we love this case?

If it were a showdown of national anthems, there’d be no contest. La Marsellaise is great and all, but they ain’t girt by anything. No points for Les Bleus there.

In wine, it’s a fair bit closer, however. They might actually have a chance. The quality in this pack is world-class, so no differences there. It’ll all come down to taste in the end. And that, mofo, is entirely down to you…

Every case contains one of each of the following:

In Cornas, when you make a syrah, it must be just that. 100% syrah. No dashes of this, or splashes of that, like we see in other parts of the Northern Rhône. Nor is new oak particularly common. They let the fruit, terroir and climate do all the talking. This beauty is darkly elegant. There’s ripe, juicy blueberries, blackberries and blackcurrants, seasoned with sage and thyme. Then comes black olive tapenade, black tea tannins, smoke and a brace of mineral notes. There’s even a gentle aftertaste of cherry schnapps. It’s deeply complex and wonderfully interesting drinking, aside from being plain tasty. There’s plenty of cellaring potential to be had, or it’ll give a bloody good showing with the help of a decanter right now.

If I said I were a Grand Cru, would you hold me against you? Or at least put me where I belong - in a cellar resting patiently for a few years, waiting for that special night we can be together again. I mean, we can do dinner now, but now’s not our time. Talk to me after 2020, at the earliest. Right now I’m rich and ripe - lots of plums, vanilla and milk choc. Forest floor and herbal undergrowth are hidden softly underneath - sage and oregano, tobacco leaf. Spice ekes in around my edges. I’m packed with broad, silky tannin riding on a backbone of bright acidity. I have loads of structure, but I’m still friendly. Now’s not the time though, but the wait will be worth it. I’ll make sure of it.

In a modern McLaren Vale style, this is one intense and complex Shiraz. Serving up plenty of dark plum fruit, dark cooking chocolate and spicy oak at the front, the finish lingers long with plush tannins and a mouth-coating texture. Big. Rich. Sumptuous. This is full throttle Shiraz. Cue Alannah Myles' 'Black Velvet' as the soundtrack and you've got your movie moment. Air guitar is optional.

Not to be confused with Geoff Merrill’s ‘Pimpala Road’ range, these Pimpala Vineyard wines are careful barrel selections from his reserve range. This has spent no less than 20 months in French and American oak barrels, plus over three years in the cellar to let all its powerful fruit and decadent oak flavour all meld together. It’s roughly a 2:1 Coonawarra:McLaren Vale blend - Coonawarra class, with ramped up richness from the Vale’s contribution. It’s like liquid black chocolate cake, with the Vale’s dark chocolate and heady spice flavours oozing head-on into dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf and roasted coconut. It’s on the fuller side of medium-bodied, with classic cabernet scaffolding fleshed out and as smooth as can be.

Mclaren Vale has certainly put its own stamp on the classic GSM blend. Some might say it's even overtaken the field. There are some intriguing floral notes to begin providing an almost ethereal quality. Top quality Grenache can do that in a Pinot-like way. But adding some weight to keep its feet on the ground, Shiraz brings things back to more earthy notes, with Mourvedre providing some serious colour in the glass and bass on the palate. Turn it up!

‘Le Chêne Noir’, rather forebodingly, translates as ‘The Black Oak’. Quite why, we’re not sure. Maybe there’s a monstrous, charred tree overlooking the sunny, idyllic vineyards. Perhaps the winery is haunted by the spirit of an arboreal spectre, lashing its branches against the window of the poor winemaker’s cottage night after night in a fervent rage. Equally, maybe I’m just being fanciful. The wine, however, is untainted by such sinister icons. You’d never know it was born in a place of dread. A bouquet of bright, brambly berries, rose petals and exotic cinnamon notes leaps out of the glass on the merest swirl. It’s a powerful mood-lifter, bright and sunny and gorgeously vibrant. There’s plenty of richness on the palate, but it’s counterbalanced by wonderful freshness, too.
